Math

We have been studying our base ten place value system in math. A central understanding in any place value system is “How much is too much?” In the base ten system, ten is too much. The base is the number in each group. The rule is you have to put things into groups of ten. The Common Core standard is students will demonstrate an understanding that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left. Along with this key concept, we have been reading and writing numbers in standard, word, and expanded forms.

Later this month, we will compare and order whole numbers and decimals and round whole numbers and decimals to various places. We will also multiply and divide numbers, collect and organize data with graphs, and look for measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode). Yes, we have a busy month ahead of us.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, we are studying ancient Americans. Essential questions such as: “Where did they come from?” “How did they get here?” and “Why did they come?” are guiding our early exploration. Later we will look at the development of the ancestors of the ancient Americans relative to geography and climate. How did that affect the resources they used, the shelters they built, and the clothing they wore? Then we will jump to early

European exploration of the American continents.

English/Language Arts (ELA)

Our first unit in our Journey’s reading book is themed School Spirit. We will be reading five stories that relate to this topic while learning reading skills such as story structure and text and graphic features. During Guided Reading, we will be applying these skills while reading the novel Schooled. Cap is quite a character! In writing we will be working on narrative(story) writing where students will be practicing planning skills to organize their personal or imaginative stories.

Genre of the Month

The September Genre of the Month is realistic fiction. Students should be searching for a book within this genre and have it approved by September 6th so there is plenty of time left to read and complete the book report project, a decorated cereal box. The project is due September 30th. Happy reading!
