AAUW November Program ~ New Leaders’ Reflections and Suggestions

Tues. November 12

A very inquisitive crowd appeared in the Sonnetag Room in the Center for Civic Engagement on Tuesday, November 12. The program which brought these interested folks together was a program “New Leaders’ Reflections and Suggestions.” Four young professionals spoke about some of the hurdles and challenges to leadership. Communication between the ages is still not easy and has never been. Different forms of reference add to the complexity as do different stages of life. The audience had questions for the speakers and left with greater insight and left very impressed with the goals of the speakers to selflessly work to make a better community. They have stepped forward as leaders who want to make a difference.

Thank you to the panelists Tiffany Bredeck, Tyler Voyt, David Xiong, Haley Houghton,

and to the moderators: Doug Hosler and Patti Twait

WINE-TASTING EVENT

What fun we had! The owners of the “Lil Old Wine Maker were super hosts. The tour of the winery was very interesting. There was a nice mixture of people interested in joining AAUW and those already members. No matter where you looked people were enjoying themselves. Marian Seagren Hall gave a short review of what AAUW is all about and some of the things that make us tick. Stop in for your Christmas purchases and thank the owners of ‘Lil Old Wine Maker (formerly Comfort Gallery). – Lucy Harvey

FALL FESTIVAL SUCCESSFUL ! Thank you to our AAUW volunteers

We were overwhelmed with the number of people who attended. We counted 73 and are sure there were some who didn't sign in. Our members networked with many other groups in our community and are now in the process of recruiting new members. A HUGE THANK YOU TO OUR AAUW VOLUNTEERS! YOU ARE AMAZING & FUN WITH WHOM TO WORK !!!!!! -Barb Keller

LUNCH BUNCH

Thanks, Sande Sliwicki for arranging a lively Lunch Bunch for us at the Olive Garden. When AAUW members are together the conversation is always lively. On December 11 at 11:30 we will be at Vino Latte for good food, thought-provoking speaker, and enlightening discussion.

Our special guest will be the owner of Vino Latte who will share how she got into the business and what her primary job is—which is Crime Scene Investigator with the State. She is a tiny person with a big personality. I know we will all enjoy her. If anyone would like to get together for November and has any ideas, please let me know. I have also been in touch with a young woman who works as an undertaker and she is willing to have lunch with us. So we have some interesting things coming up.Please let Sande Sliwicki know that you would like a plate at the table. or 715-845-6854

The Blue Fox: A Novel by Sjon, Victoria Cribb (translator)

from Publishers Weekly

This short novel begins like a fragmented poem as a hunter appears to be losing his grip on reality in the hopes of capturing an elusive blue fox in the snowy, secluded woods: “Now the man has a chance of lessening the gap between himself and the little fox”; “Then he did an about-turn and got on all fours, raising his right leg like a dog pissing on a tussock.” The story moves to the days before the hunt, with an eerie tale of a girl found in a ship’s hold, and then continues into her eventual legacy. The shifts in chronology—just before, just after—create tension, at once elucidating and perplexing. Set against the stark backdrop of the Icelandic winter, an elusive, enigmatic fox leads a hunter on a transformative quest.... By the end of Sjón’s slender, spellbinding fable of a novel, none of their lives will be the same. Winner of the 2005 Nordic Council Literature Prize—the Nordic world’s highest literary honor—The Blue Fox is part mystery, part fairy tale, and the perfect introduction to a mind-bending, world-class literary talent..

AAUW-WI Holds Successful Lobby Day
About 40 AAUW of Wisconsin members had a highly successful Legislative Day, which included training from AAUW representatives. Members discussed equal pay, paid family leave, women’s reproductive health, and school vouchers while meeting with 18 state legislative offices. AAUW-WI President Joyce Hoffman even received an impromptu standing ovation when her representative pulled her into a Democratic Caucus meeting and asked her to speak about the 30 branches in Wisconsin. Congratulations to all the leaders and members of AAUW-WI!
