English 10 Excerpt Reading Predictions / Name:

Read the excerpts from Frankenstein, The Color of Water, and Black Boy. Choose one excerpt and complete the seven (7) questions below. Click the gray boxes to type your answers. If you do not finish during class, email the document to yourself so that you can complete it at home. When you are done, email it to me () as an attachment or print it out and hand it in.

1.  Choose one significant passage - something between a few sentences and a paragraph. Record it, with the page number (45). If it is lengthy, use an ellipsis (…) to break it up.

2.  In your own words, what do you predict will make this passage significant to important ideas raised in the rest of the book? What may it be revealing to you about the rest of the book?

3.  After reading the first chapter, identify at least two different conflicts you predict will arise in the book. Using the drop down menu, first identify what kind of conflict it is, then explain your thinking about the conflict and who is involved.

4.  What is an important idea or theme that the author introduces in the first chapter? What stands out so far about the novel? Think about what the author focuses on – is it the setting, characters, conflict…? Explain your answer by pointing to specific sentences or passages that deal with the important idea.

5.  Choose one or two significant characters that appear in the novel so far. Record pertinent information about each character by recording descriptions and/or information about what’s important to the character or what thoughts and feelings they have. Use examples from the text.

6.  Go back to the first page of your excerpt. Re-read the page find words or phrases that for each one of the following:

Descriptive words or phrases that paint a picture… / Words or phrases that raise a question in my mind… / Interesting words or phrases that catch my attention in some way..

7.  Record two “I wonder…?” questions based on evidence from the excerpt. I will not accept questions like “I wonder what’s going to happen?” or their variations.
