Objectives:

This course will use the Order of Instruction for teaching Math in Orange County and will cover all

standards required by the state for 7th grade. The curriculum will prepare students for the state and

national assessments. The mission of the math department this year is to provide opportunities for

developing high quality mathematical skills and abilities with an attitude for success.

Course Outline:

·  First Quarter – Integers, Absolute Value, Graphing, Decimals

·  Second Quarter –Fractions, Percent, Interest, Solving One-Step Equations

·  Third Quarter – Solving Two-Step Equations, Ratios, Proportions, Measurement, Similar Figures, Scale Drawings, Data Analysis, Stem-n-Leaf, Histograms, Circle Graph

·  Fourth Quarter - Perimeter, Circumference, Area, Volume, and Surface Area Translations, Reflections, Rotations and Dilations, Probability

Math Expectations:

Students are expected to be active participants in their education. The student is expected:

·  To attend class each day (attendance and passage rates in math have a strong correlation)

·  Complete all homework and assignments in a timely manner

·  Request extra help when needed, ask questions

·  Take advantage of school tutoring or use outside tutoring services

·  Spend time outside of class practicing and reinforcing skills to fill in your “math holes”.

Absences and Make-Up Work:

Make up work is posted on the class website, http://teacherpress.ocps.net/jenniferrush/.

·  The student is responsible for getting make-up work after an absence, asking questions of other students or the teacher (during lunch or after school), and turning in the missed work within one week of the absence. See the teacher for absences longer than 5 school days. For students without internet access a hard copy of make-up work may be obtained with a signed note from a parent or guardian (with a daytime phone number).

·  Regular attendance is important to having a successful learning experience When a student is absent, he/she may miss not only a written assignment, which can completed easily, but he/she also misses a class discussion or explanation, which can never be made up.

Homework:

·  Homework will be assigned as needed to extend the practice or exploration of current topics.

·  Homework is due the next day at the beginning of class with the problem copied and work shown for full credit – work turned in after that point will not be given full credit.

·  If a student did not complete the homework they may turn it in the next day for 70%. If work is turned in more than one day late partial credit will be given. However, they must copy the problem, show all work, and have the correct answers (may be copied from the board as they follow along with me in class).

Grading procedures: Grades will be calculated using the following weights:

35% Tests, Projects 20% Bellwork, Planner

35% Classwork, Quizzes, etc. 10% Homework

·  Some math assignments that are assigned during the year will be graded according to IB MYP criteria. In addition, the assignment will be assigned a point value and graded as such.

IB Honor Code

This is a reminder that all IB students have read and signed an agreement to follow the IB honor code. All team students are expected to maintain that honor code in each class, regardless of the assignment expectations.

Glenridge Middle school and International Baccalaureate Program treat cheating as a serious matter. In addition to losing credit for the assignment, the student may face possible disciplinary action.

Whether you are specifically asked to sign the Honor Pledge for each assignment or not, it will be understood that as a Glenridge IB MYP student you would be able to sign and attest as true the following:

On my honor, I promise that I will not cheat on any assignment or examination, nor will I pass on information to others.

I have read and understand the expectations and the course as outlined in the syllabus. I have also read and agree to abide by the IB Honor Code.

*This forms a contract between the student and the teacher. Any questions that arise during the year will be referred back to this document. When in question about what is allowed and what is not allowed, the student should contact the teacher to avoid any unnecessary problems.

**All work must be done in pencil! It is suggested that each student come to class with multiple sharpened pencils and extra erasers.
