Water Management Specialist

The AfricaRiceCenter – WARDA is seeking a Water Management Specialist at the Internationally Recruited Staff level, Principal Staff category.

The Africa Rice Center (WARDA) is an autonomous intergovernmental research association of African member states and one of the 15 international Centers supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). WARDA’s mission is to contribute to poverty alleviation and food security in Africa, through research, development and partnership activities aimed at increasing productivity and profitability of the rice sector in ways that ensure the sustainability of the farming environment.

The successful candidate will join WARDA’s multi-disciplinary team of scientists in Cotonou, Benin and contribute to the Center’s efforts to significantly increase the quality, usefulness and availability of knowledge and technology within the rice sector to support and improve the well-being of the poor in Africa.

  1. Responsibilities

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Research and Program Leader, Integrated Rice Production Systems, the position holder will:

  • Lead and develop water management research projects that assist in fulfilling WARDA’s mission
  • Study and promote integrated water management options for increased and sustainable rice productivity at the irrigated, lowland and watershed level
  • Lead integrated land and water management activities
  • Collaborate with WARDA’s social scientist and impact economist on studying water resource management by local communities and develop appropriate social management structures
  • Provide appropriate capacity-enhancing training to NARS staff
  • Document research results and publish peer-reviewed journal articles
  • Contribute to WARDA’s resource mobilization efforts.

2.Requirements

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a PhD in Water Management or Hydrology
  • At least five years post-doctoral experience
  • Strong publication record
  • Proven record of resource mobilization
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English or French, with a good knowledge of the other.
  • Field experience in Africa, and especially West Africa, is an asset.
