Course Description:

BioScience Survey is a unique course that offers an overview of the types of occupations for which you may be interested in both the Health and Biotechnology fields.

Course Objectives:

§  Gain a clear understanding of their own personality as it relates to possible careers.

§  Gain a general understanding of the organization of Health and Biotechnology fields.

§  Research the description of and necessary preparations needed for many different careers within the BioScience world.

§  Clearly understand the academic pathways required for various occupations.

§  Set generalized goals for their future occupation.

§  See the facilities within which health science and biotech professionals work.

Organization of Course:

§  Quarter 1: Who Am I?

§  Quarter 2: Preparation for Success & Introduction to Occupations

§  Quarter 3: Speaker Series

§  Quarter 4: Global Health

Student Expectations:

§  To complete all reading and discussion requirements.

§  To summarize all Guest Speaker presentations.

§  To complete all required Research assignments

§  To compile a digital Portfolio File (google drive) over the course of the year containing the following components:

o  Who Am I Unit

§  Definition of Success

§  Dream Job

§  Personal Value List & Statement

§  This is how I learn

§  Myers Briggs Reflection

§  “Who Am I?” Final Essay

o  Preparation for Success Unit

§  Study Skills State of the Student

§  Four Year High School Academic Plan

o  Speaker Series

§  Speaker Notes

§  Guest Speaker Summaries

o  Global Health Unit

§  Personal Impact Statement

Grading Methods:

§  Primarily, students will be evaluated on the completion and quality of all required portfolio assignments.

§  Socratic discussions will be key components.

§  Lectures and readings will be used for background information.

§  Exams will not be significant assessment tools in this course.

§  Completion, assignment quality, the meeting of deadlines and discussion participation will be the key assessment components AND the main challenge.

§  Grading: This course will be graded on a “pass” or “No-pass” scale.

§  Student will earn 2.5 credits per semester for a grade of “pass”

§  Students will be scored in the class on each assignment. These scores will factor in to the re-application process to continue on in the Bioscience Academy junior year.

Necessary Materials:

§  Academic Planner

§  School Binder should contain one section for Survey: this will contain work in progress, research printouts, reading excerpts. Organization is key.

§  Notebook paper for lecture notes, journal assignments, guest speaker notes, and research notations.

Late Work:

Because of the nature of the Academy as a preparation for careers of great responsibility, Academy students will be held to even higher standards. Assignments not turned in on the due date will result in a grade deduction with each day assignment is late. The challenge that this course will present is to keep up with assignments and to abstain from procrastination.
