Describing Chemical Reactions WS

1.  Write a word and balanced chemical equations for each of the following chemical reactions. Include symbols for physical states when indicated.

a.  Hydrogen peroxide in an aqueous solution decomposes to produce oxygen and water.

b.  Solid copper metal reacts with aqueous silver nitrate to produce solid silver metal and aqueous copper nitrate.

c.  Solid zinc metal reacts with aqueous copper sulfate to produce solid copper metal and aqueous zinc sulfate.

2.  Translate the following equations into sentences:

a.  2ZnO(s) +C(s) à 2Zn(s) + CO2 (g)

b.  Na2O(s) +2CO2(g) + H2O(g) à 2NaHCO3(s)

3.  Write word, formula, and balanced chemical equations for each of the following reactions:

a.  Solid calcium metal reacts with water to form aqueous calcium hydroxide and hydrogen gas.

b.  Nitrogen dioxide gas reacts with water to form aqueous nitric acid and nitrogen monoxide gas.

c.  Solid potassium chlorate decomposes to form solid potassium chloride and oxygen gas.

4.  Write balanced chemical equations for each of the following reactions:

a.  When aqueous solution of sulfuric acid and barium chloride are missed, barium sulfate precipitates from an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid.

b.  Aluminum sulfate, and ingredient in antiperspirants, is made by the reaction of solid aluminum oxide with aqueous sulfuric acid. In addition to aqueous aluminum sulfate, water is also produced.

5.  Write balanced chemical equations for each of the following reactions:

a.  The white paste that lifeguards rub on their noses to prevent sunburn contains the active ingredient zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is made by reacting solid zinc sulfide with oxygen gas. Sulfur dioxide gas is also produced.

b.  One of the most important uses of sulfuric acid is in the production of phosphoric acid for use in the making of fertilizers. Solid calcium phosphate is reacted with aqueous sulfuric acid to for phosphoric acid and solid calcium sulfate.
