Job Description

Job Title: Sacristan Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

Primary Function: Under the direction of the pastor or other assigned supervisor, is responsible for preparation for daily, Sunday, and other Liturgical Celebrations of the Church.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform in support of the Diocese of Tucson and the parish’s spiritual and pastoral mission
  • Shall abide by Catholic principles in the employee’s professional and public life, and shall govern his/her professional and public life in accordance with Catholic morals and principles to demonstrate adherence to Catholic moral strictures.
  • Prepare the Church and the sanctuary for Liturgy or Sacraments including the opening and closing of the facilities
  • Set up objects, vessels, and vestments; return to their proper place after liturgy
  • Welcome ministers and visiting Priests; participate in rites as requested
  • Maintain vestments, and other articles and linens in clean and usable condition
  • Maintain an inventory of vessels and other Church items such as wine, bread, candles, charcoal, and incense
  • Prepare all Liturgical materials necessary including
  • Be responsible at all times for the care and security of Liturgical implements and materials
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the Sacristy and Altar areas; report need for repairs as necessary
  • Maintain confidentiality on all parish matters including sensitive parish information
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the pastor or other assigned supervisor

Physical/Mental Requirements: Requires coordination and manual dexterity, normal mental and visual ability; ability to lift in a normal church liturgical environment.

Required Activities: Walking; sitting; standing’\; kneeling; stooping; reaching; talking, handling; hearing; and carrying.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must have a working knowledge of and a strong commitment to the mission of the Diocese and Catholic Church; be in full communion with the Church
  • Be a self-starter, be well-organized, detail oriented; conscientious; committed to the objectives of the parish
  • Be concerned about good appearance of the place of community prayer
  • Work well with others; be a team player, possess a positive attitude
  • Have a working knowledge of Sacristan requirements including a knowledge of liturgical terms, and documents as needed for each ceremony
  • Be available to attend Liturgy meetings; work varying schedules including weekends,holy days, and holidays
  • Be able to successfully complete a criminal history and background check
  • Professional bearing and neat, personal appearance.

Education and Experience:

  • A high school graduate or equivalent experience.
  • Academic or experiential knowledge of liturgical ministry and its function in the Catholic Church
  • Knowledge of the Liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church and pertinent Church documents in accord with liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council

  • Bi-lingual (English, Spanish)
