Absent: Henry

Presenting: Lilly, Sara, Kate

Michael L - eating an apple noisily during the quiz…

Kate - please turn to page 156 - Penelope and Suitors picture - Book 4 - suitors trying to kill Telemachus - trying to stop them from marrying Penelope; Zeus and Hermes come to talk to Calypso

Kate: Reading starting on line 129 - excellent expression in the reading - nice job

First Script: Lilly as Hermes; Kate as Calypso - Funny job of using the back and forth and then the direct address of the audience...watch me put him in his place...ok fine ...whatever

Sylvia - Calypso relates to hubris/humility - thought she could keep O - all the other goddesses had their men taken away - thought she was more important

James - gods/humans - even though Calypso is a god, Zeus is a senior god - humans must listen even if they disagree

Morgan - related to James - unfair how Zeus would treat people so unfairly - senior gods had relationships with multiple humans

Ben - gods can control the fate - Hermes comes down - Calypso forced

Margo - this section shows how gods really control all mortals - certain gods think they have power over other gods - such as Zeus over Calypso - even though they are both immortal

Jack - Calypso’s rant - O does not have anything to say in the situation Zeus’ commands do benefit O - how the gods could be on the sort of mortal side

Brian - back to Morgan’s point - a lot about Greek culture - okay if a married man with a lot of women - married women unacceptable…

Jack - Calypso went on for quite a while - clearly portrayed in the presentation “I will gladly advise him - hide nothing” - contradicting her own opinions BTT

Kate - anyone think about why?

Jared - she realizes that she is kind of wrong - just says ok fine

Sylvia - if she does go against the gods, then they’ll kill him...wouldn’t get home

Morgan - for the reason why - exiled to an island already - could get worse for her…

Ben - for fate/freeedom - even though your fate seems determined could easily be changed - O got changed

Jack - fate/freedom - belief that gods create the fate yet they do not agree with each other - so whose fate

Not yet talked: Mia, Riley, Michael B, Michael L, Jose, Frederick, Jackie, Zach, Manya

Sara reading starting on line 190 - good pronunciation and flow - could have used more expression - jumps to line 236…

Second Script: Kate as Calypso - Sara as Odysseus - nice address of the audience again - I’m so much better than Penelope - good lines...well spoken - Boost her ego a lot….

Zach - O hubris/humility - he is showing humility to agree with Calypso - humans not as good as goddess - trying to get her to help him out

Riley Odysseus desperate to see his son - feels guilty for being with Calypso for so long

Manya - Calypso warns about the dangers - wants him to change his mind

Michael L - O stayed away from home way too long - chose to go home - shows he likes his home - he is homesick - nostalgic

Jackie - wants to leave now - on Calypso’s island - hasn’t had a chance to leave and Poseidon is far away - he might not have another chance

Margo - methods of persuasion - we could say O the way he describes his wife...does boost Calypso’s ego...uses mortal vs god…

Manya - “God wreck me again I can bear that too” BTT - does not care about dangers

Zach - BTT 158-159 - if you only knew what pains - choosing adventure over comfort - leaving Calypso’s island - choosing comfort over adventure - on an adventure on Calypso’s island - wants comfort of his own palace

Frederick - O uses concession - line 239-240 - “Your beauty and stature” - conceding that yeah you are better than her but I still love her

Sylvia - second thought question also - even though she is immortal - still in love with her regardless - she might be prettier than Penelope is...still wants to go back

Ben - to be remembered - if he just stays on the island - the suitors will take over his kingdom

Brian - on p 159 - top Calypso says that he would be immortal BTT - remembered more but he chose to go back home

Ben - respectful disagreement - can’t be remembered if left on an island

Kate - live forever but not go back - Achilles choice

Jack - also respectfully disagree with Brian - couldn’t tell his story if he stayed on the island…

Michael B - methods of persuasion - appeal to Athena;s emotions - appealing to her to help him to get home - also third thought question - Calypso warns him to keep him there...

Not yet talked: Mia, Jose

Lilly - good slide talking about Ino

Lilly - good, clear pronunciation of the passage - could be more emotional in expression

Script 3 - Lilly as Poseidon with tin foil trident - Sara as being blown around by Lilly as Odysseus

Mia - I thought Poseidon relates to Sisyphus - when O is trying to get back, Poseidon is really - O is so close to getting back to Ithaca and Poseidon gets in his way - O manages to stay alive

Jose - relationship between O and sea/land - god of land and Poseidon - conflicts between those 2 and their different points of view - foreshadows

Brian - both violate xenia - Poseidon is god of the sea - not very welcoming - fill my cup with pain - O is saying this line 331 BTT - showing that O is ready to fight Poseidon even on Poseidon’s turf/sea

James - xenia - Odysseus violates xenia by going on to the sea - without bringing to a gift to Poseidon - when Poseidon showed him he didn’t want him there - also stealing Cyclops sheep and blinding him - poseidon also violating it - still meant to look after O - trying to kill him instead

Sylvia - in the book, look how the gods have changed their mind about O - connects to Sisyphus - O punishments will never be complete - a way out of it - Tantalus - keeps trying to kill O but it never happens

Zach - on the journey - on the sea - problems with Poseidon - but on land he is eager to get back on the sea

Margo - BTT - back to the same quote Sylvia used - off with my Ethiopians - how in a way O seems immortal - even as Poseidon was trying to kill him the whole time - even Poseidon knows the gods are on O’s side - giving O a sense of immortality

Brian - I disagree with Margo respectfully - even though Poseidon is aware that the gods are against him I don’t think he cares

Jose - for the first question, Odysseus given the scarf by Ino - immortal but only for a limited time - had to throw it back

Sylvia - sea is sort of like Poseidon’s home - O’s raft is sort of like O’s home

Ben - I agree with Jose - battle of the sea - shows how O is mortal - constantly needs exterior help - getting off the island or the scarf…

Sylvia - night swept down from the sky - came quickly, unexpectedly - Poseidon changing weather quickly

Jackie - nymph foretold it well - cup of pain - Greek culture - grapes and olives and wine - cup like a wine glass

James - more fig lang - fury boil - emotions can’t actually boil - helping to show how angry he was - getting hot-headed

Brian - line 308 BTT - Phaecian island - rising like a shield - right before Poseidon attacks him - looks like to get bigger really fast…

Michael L - line 337 - BTT - fearful of Poseidon - life was at stake

Zach - Phaician - his defense is to get on land like a shield is

Morgan- line 307 - wine dark sea - sea not the real color - god of wine - like Jackie said…

Kate - symmetry throughout these three passages...each of them say something and then act another way - why so much of this?

Lilly - how did O change from all these passages?

Sylvia - connects to Greek culture - contradiction - every good thing they do a bad contradiction

Ben - O does not change that much - sticking to his guns…

Jack - O went from not trusting Calypso to trusting and then not trusting her again once the seas attacked him
