Safety Committee Meeting Minutes
February 28, 2017
I. Discussion of current reported Employee and Student injury reports.
A review of all the student and non-student injuries resulted in a decision that none of them were caused by a safety issue, but were the result of normal student interactions and/or things that could be resolved easily.
II. Building Issues Discussion-things that need to be addressed.
1. Aiken-None Jennifer Susuki
2. Alameda-None Karla Cervantes
3. Cairo-None Robert Christensen
4. Maintenance- Bob passed around an extension cord for all of us to look at and asked that we please include extension cords in our safety inspections. This cord had bare wires showing and was a fire hazard. Bob Bennett
5. Grounds-None Antonio Corona
6. May Roberts-None Marshell Hooker
7. Nutrition Services-Pam brought up the fact that last month it was noted that one of the coffee pots was written up as not safe. When she checked it out she found that it has the UL approved stamped on it. Bob reminded us that we need to make sure to check the small appliances in each school to make sure they are UL approved. The previous Fire Marshal checked for this on her walk through inspections of the buildings
Pam Suyematsu
8. OHS-In the Commons area they have been using caution tape on all the exits except for one to guide the students to use certain doors for exiting. William Derr
9. OMS-Since the kitchen remodel there have been two carts in the back hallway which could be a problem when trying to exit for a fire. Pam will take care of the carts so they are not an issue any more. Laurie Duerr
10. Pioneer-None Jennifer Susuki
11. Transportation-None Diana Howarth
III. Safety Presentation-Robert Christensen – First Aid Kits – Robert handed out the Ontario School District suggested items to have in your first aid kit supplies (see attached). Cairo also has a partial first aid kit that they send with the individuals that are on duty at recess. This included a vest, whistle and a mini first aid kit with products for being able to treat small injuries while they are on duty. Marshell added that they label each mini first aid kit with names so that they can have volunteers replenish the mini kits and return them to the individual.
Marshell Hooker – Preventing Pest Infestation. The fifteen ways to prevent pest infestations are:
· Store food in airtight containers
· Keep a tight lid on your trash can at all times and move to a dumpster as soon as possible.
· Fill Home or office cracks or holes in walls, foundation and vents.
· Inspect dried food packages for pests before you buy them.
· Keep trees and bushes away from the building.
· Fix leaking pipes, faucets, and appliances since standing water attracts pests.
· Clean your counter tops, tables, and floors on a regular basis.
· Install screens on your windows or storm doors.
· Eliminate any scrap wood inside or outside your home or office.
· Use pest control products (maintenance will take care of the application of District approved product applications)
· Check your pets for fleas before they come inside.
· Vacuum frequently to eliminate pests and /or pest eggs.
· Use citronella candles when outdoors to prevent mosquitoes. (Not recommended for School District use)
· Resist using wood mulch for your landscaping. Instead, try gravel or rock.
Antonio will be doing inspections for problem areas causing pest infestations. He reminded us all that we should have all of our food products, no matter where they are, in a glass or plastic container with a lid that seals it. Pests can eat through crackers bags and boxes.
Marshell asked who should be cleaning the staff lounges and Bob let us know that the custodians are not asked to clean staff lounges. The staff lounges should be maintained by the staff that uses it. Bob suggested that rotation of staff members for cleaning might work.
IV. Safety Inspection Discussion- Go over inspection reports
Aiken-No Issues Laurie Duerr
Alameda-Printer cord needs to be replaced or repaired.
Willam Derr
Cairo-No Issues Diana Howarth
Pioneer- It was noted that there is still an issue with students leaving their coats and back-
packs on the floor in the hallway. This could be a hazard if trying to leave the building in a hurry. Marshell suggested that Pioneer use this as part of PBS so the students feel more responsibility for making sure their coats and backpacks are hung out of the way.
