BOSWELL HIGH SCHOOL

January 12, 2017

BOS Family,

As we end the 1st semester, I want to give you all a heartfelt thank you for all that you do to partner with Boswell High School in the best interest of our students. Thank you to those who attended the Personal Course Selection Information Meeting last week as we introduce a new system for students to register for classes for the 2017-18 school year. Counselors will be visiting classrooms to share information with students as well. The largest change is that parents and students will select courses by period (much like the system used in college.) If a particular section is full, the student will have to select the next available section.

As a reminder, Monday, January 16th is a holiday. We will begin the 2nd semester on Tuesday, January 17th. Students will be bringing home their 2nd semester schedules today! Next week PSAT scores will be shared with students in their math class and a parent information meeting will be held on February 2nd to give more information that is detailed in regards to the results. In addition, administrators will be visiting classrooms next week as well to review our campus rules and expectations. One area we need your help in is dress code. With unseasonably warm weather at this time of year, we are seeing a rise in “shredded/ torn” jeans. While these are not banned from campus, the holes can be no higher than mid-thigh. It is not acceptable to wear tights, etc. under the jeans as a means to be in dress code. Any student out of dress code has three choices: 1) change clothes immediately and return to class; 2) call home for a 2nd set of clothes and return to class; or 3) sit in SAC (in school suspension) for the remainder of the day. My intent is always for students to be in class, but they must be in dress code.

Our annual Dual Credit Parent Meeting is scheduled for January 23rd at 6:00 PM in the Pioneer Lecture Hall. Please attend if your student is interested or will take a dual credit course next year. It is a great opportunity to acquire information as well as ask questions before making your final decision. On a personal note, I have two children. One graduated with 27 hours of college credit from Advanced Placement courses and the other graduated with 24 hours from dual credit. In each of these scenarios, they were able to start college and take courses within their major immediately and graduated from college in 3 and 3.5 years. As a parent, I advocate for both of these paths for college bound students. Not only did my children graduate in record time it was at a savings of greater than $15,000 per child. I will be speaking at the Dual Credit Parent Meeting and will be happy to answer questions about both programs from a parent perspective.

Congratulations to our State ranked girls basketball team. We are currently ranked 7th in the state. In addition, congratulations goes out to one girls’ basketball player who has been nominated for the 2017 McDonald’s All American Games. This student is one of 720 high school basketball players nationwide to receive this nomination. The selected 24 female athletes will be announced on ESPNU on January 15 at 9:30 PM. CT. Once again, we are BOS proud to have one of our student athletes considered for this prestigious honor.

Congratulations also goes out to Mr. Stuart Spoon, Assistant Band Director. Mr. Spoon is our campus’ nominee for the UIL Sponsor of Excellence Award. We will find out toward the end of the month if he is selected to receive this state honor.

Lastly, state law requires that each school’s report card is shared with parents. Boswell’s School Report Card can be found on our campus website. Once on our webpage, scroll down and click on Accountability on the right side. On the left side under Accountability click on the 2015-16 School Report Card. For a more complete report about Boswell High School, the Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR), is also available under Accountability on our website. Please note, this document is our current accountability rating. Please do not hesitate in asking any questions once you have reviewed the document.

Thank you for your continued support of Boswell High School.

Sincerely,

Nika Davis

BHS Principal
