Meeting 2874

Grace Portolesi

Grace Portolesi(born 26 June 1968)was anAustralianpolitician who represented theSouth Australian House of Assemblyseat ofHartleyfrom 2006 to 2014 for theAustralian Labor Party.

Previously the parliamentary secretary assisting the Attorney-General, in 2010 Grace was appointed Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation, Multicultural Affairs, Youth and Volunteers. Grace Portolesi was appointed Minister for Education and Child Development in 2011, a position she held until 2013. From 2013 to 2014 she was the Minister for Employment, Higher Education and Skills, Minister for Science and Information Economy, and a Member of the Executive Council.

Grace is now chair of the state’s Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission (SAMEAC) replacing Hieu Van Le who has been appointed Governor.

SAMEAC’s primary function is to

  • Increase awareness and understanding of the ethnic diversity of the South Australian Community, and the implication of the diversity
  • Advise the government and public authorities on, and assist in all matters relating to multiculturalism and ethnic affairs.

Of migrants who come to SA each year, 160,000 come on skills visa, 60,000 on family reunion visas and only 14,000 are refugees.

Grace suggested that clubs invite ethnic groups to attend meetings and tell Rotary about their culture and their needs. This will increase awareness and understanding which leads to respect for their culture and greater harmony.

The main communities coming to Australia at present are Indian, Chinese, Korean, Philippinos and South Africans.

Grace suggests there is a wealth of skills and talent which could be of assistance to Rotary who in turn can be of assistance to these communities. She also suggested that we attend some of the different cultural festivals held throughout SA to broaden our knowledge of a wider variety of cultures.

“Cultural differences should not separate us from each

other, but rather cultural diversity brings a collective

strength that can benefit all of humanity.”

- Robert Alan (American writer, artist and social activist; 1922-1978)
