COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of the course, students will have the ability to transcribe mailable documents from recordings using a word processor. Students will also improve their English skills and proofreading ability and be familiar with a variety of written business communications.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: Self-paced with hands-on activities are used to teach the students transcribing in the modern office. The documents the students key onto the computer are adapted from actual business documents and are typical of machine transcription performed in real offices. Students transcribe a variety of documents such as letters, memos, tables, reports, agendas, and forms. Letterheads and forms are provided on the text-workbook CD.

LAB USE: Most students will need to spend time in the lab in order to get assignments in on time. The computer lab is open when the college office is open (except when in use by a class). The Critical Skills Lab’s computers are also available for your use. Check with the office for definite lab hours.

ASSIGNMENTS; There are 20 chapters in the text and three tests. The tests include both written and dictation exercises. Students must complete all chapters and tests to complete the course. Word mastery and language skill exercises precede each set of dictations in each chapter. These should be completed; however, it is not necessary to hand these in to the instructor.

TESTS: There are three tests each consisting of dictated material (to be transcribed by the student) and written tests. There are no traditional mid-term and final exams.

Grade values are as follows:

A Superior 4.0 D Below Average 1.0

B Above Average 3.0 F Failure 0.0

C Average 2.0 W Withdrawal—See below

I Incomplete—See below

“I” - You may receive a final report of “I”, or incomplete, if you have completed at least 3/4 of the course with a grade of “C” or better but are unable to complete the class for good cause. You must arrange for the incomplete with your instructor and acknowledge the statement of work you must complete to receive a final grade. You have until March 15 for Fall Semester and October 15 for Spring and Summer Semesters to complete the work for a final grade. An incomplete not made up within this time period will have a grade assigned by the instructor which could be and “F” or “W”.

“W” - Students may opt for a withdrawal up to the 13th week of classes. It is your responsibility to withdraw formally from a course. Instructors have the option of assigning a failing grade for unofficial withdrawals. The “W” is not used in computing your cumulative grade-point average. It will appear, however, on your transcript and will always be a permanent part of it. Veterans who withdraw from classes after the official add/drop period may experience penalties and may be required to pay back part or all of the benefits received for that course. If you are a veteran contemplating changes in enrollment, you should get the advice of the Director of Student Financial Services.

It is the student’s responsibility to officially withdraw from this course by contacting the Business Office.

NOTE: The instructor reserves the right to change certain aspects of the course and/or course syllabus. No changes will be made, however, without informing the students in a timely and clear manner. It is not anticipated that there will be any major changes in the content of this syllabus.
