Rodney Bourke reports ( August 2013 )
Filmmaking in 35mm, 9.5, 16mm, 8mm, Single 8/Super 8 Keep your originals on FILM, “Saving the Past, and our Heritage”
for Family, Filmmaking and Future Generations.
Why Film?
Although it was back in the 1930’s that Kodachrome was developed, it wasn’t until the 2000’s that Super 8 Kodachrome has been scanned and calculated as having at least 1.2K resolution, 16/9 Max Super 8 at 1.5K, 9.5mm/16mm Kodachrome at 4K lines and 35mm up to 12K, 70mm is three times the size again with up to 36K and IMAX well over 100K . But since Kodachrome has been discontinued, living in the Millennium, New developments have happened in Film Technology, with Fuji Velvia, Kodak’s Negative Film Stocks being released with resolution, definition and colours like Kodachrome.
For the opposite effect you can use high speed film, designed mainly for night cinematography, giving that grainy look with a warm texture, and artistic feeling that pixels cannot immolate.
Just about every Digital Cinema in Australia is showing 2K resolution that’s only twice as good as 1K Blue ray. Some say Digital HD Video 1K has replaced Film! But I say it is only a replacement for Digital DVD and Laserdisc with 1/2K, and Analogue Beta & VHS 1/4K. In fact for Archiving always keep your original Master on FILM, by making a transfer, to whatever Digital format comes along, you have the best of both worlds. One does not replace the other, but can complement the other.
Make many copies from Film to Video, and send to Relatives, in case of Theft, Storms, Fire, Mould, Floods, Earthquakes, Mudslides and Tornados, Cyclones, Twisters, Hurricanes, Tsunami & Separation Etc.
As Video, Computers and Phones are always updating themselves and becoming Redundant, Out of date, and Worthless. Real Filmmakers using Real Film don’t have this problem, what you learn Today is still applicable Tomorrow, as film has the highest resolution, the equipment still retains its value and Usefulness. Thus allowing the filmmaker the Convenience to make a copy to a lesser medium like DVD.
High Resolution Film (Sun)
50ASA Fuji Velvia, Wittner 54ASA B/W, Kodak Vision 3 50D Negative
Medium Resolution Film (Cloud)
100ASA Fuji Velvia, Adox & Wittner 100ASA B/W, Pro 8 100 Negative
Low Resolution Film (Night)
160ASA Kodak Tri-X B&W, Wittner Chrome 200 & 200 B/W, 200T & 500T Kodak Vision 3 Negative
FILM STILL HAS THE HIGHEST RESOLUTION/DEFINITION
New 16mm film stock, will look just as good weather it is in a 16mm Movie Camera made in 1920’s or year 2000’s. Same with Still FILM
New 35mm Still Film Stock, in an old 35mm Still Camera from 1930’s will look as good as a year 2000’s model.
Not so with Digital every year there being outdated in resolution, with new Cameras and new Memory Cards. Film users don’t have this problem.
Want to buy a cheap 22 Megapixel camera, then buy a 35mm FILM SLR, this is the result of a Fuji Velvia Slide, according to Australian Photography Magazine, February 2005, Page 74.
For Higher Definition try Medium Format 127, 120/220 & 620 roll film, from 4X4, 6X6, 6X9, 6X12 & 6X16.5 that’s 2 to 11 times the size of 35mm ( were looking at 44 to 240 Megapixel camera ).
New Movies still made on Film

For the History of Kodachrome see http://www.historicphotoarchive.com/index.html
And http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kodachrome
(Kodachrome Film is still able to be processed in 8mm, 9.5, 16mm, 35mm, 120, even Super 8 Silent/Sound. All in beautiful Black & White.) Note: Kodachrome from 2000’s will give an excellent result, 1990’s good, 1980’s Fair to Faint and 1970’s Poor to Blank Results.
Interestingly The last Issue of Super 8 Today Magazine No16 page 33, article written by USA Super 8 Guru Chris Cottrill recommends over exposing K40 by one or two stops at 20 or 10 ASA. http://www.super8today.net/
Also International Movie Making magazine from the UK Issue No1 for 2013 page 44, has reprinted this article in short. http://super8data.com/database/books_list/magazines/magazine_imm.htm
This can be Processed at any Black & White Lab around the World. But Film Rescue, Canada, and Super8 Reversal Lab, Holland & Giant Reel & Nano Lab of Oz mention Kodachrome specifically. You can Process Kodachrome film YOURSELF, In Black & White, or do any of the Workshops, To be held in Sydney, Albury-Wodonga & Melbourne. By Moving Image Coalition.
35mm, 9.5mm, 16mm, 8mm & SUPER 8
FILM STOCK FUJI VELVIA
The New Super 8 Fuji Velia 50 ASA seems to work on all Super 8 cameras with a correct exposure, But to be 100% sure before making your Hollywood master piece I recommend always do a TEST ROLL, and write down your experiments. eg Day, Night, Indoors, Outdoors, Sun, Shade, 1, 9, 18, 24 Frames Per Second, Zoom in & out, Macro. And try different film stocks to suit your needs, etc. And read your Instruction manual.
Kodak also continues to make in Super 8, Negative 50, 200 & 500ASA,and Black & White 160ASA Tri-X. http://motion.kodak.com/US/en/motion/Hub/why1.htm
