Lambeth and Southwark Population Health Fellowship - Expressions of Interest for host GP practices

Introduction

In September 2015 NHS Lambeth and Southwark CCGs, with the support of Health Education South London (HESL) and Kings College London (KCL), recruited 6 newly qualified GPs to Lambeth and Southwark to participate in an innovative scheme to create a cohort of Population Health Improvement Fellows across both boroughs, and attract enthusiastic, talented young doctors to the area.

We are now entering the second year of the scheme and would now like to invite expressions of interest from Lambeth practices to host our three Lambeth fellows.

This scheme will combine three 3-hour sessions of clinical work in a GP practice with time in the CCG completing commissioning projects and one day a week studying for the second year of a Master’s in Public Health (Primary Care).

Call for expressions of interest

The CCGs, in partnership with the Federation, are seeking expressions of interest from GP practices in Lambeth for their three clinical sessions over a twelve-month period from October 2016 –September 2017.

Practice specification

These are unique and challenging roles, combining front line clinical work with commissioning projects and completing a Master’s Degree at the same time. We are seeking clinical environments where the fellows can feel supported in their practice environment. Please note working sessions will need to change at least once during the academic year due to a change in taught timetable activities. These changes will be discussed locally with successful practices.

Furthermore, we are keen that this additional GP capacity supports the work of our local GP Federations on quality improvement in general practice.

We are therefore seeking expressions of interest from GP practices who can demonstrate the following:

  • A suitable and supportive environment, including:
  • existing systems to provide clinical and developmental support (e.g. orientation/ induction, appropriate clinical supervision, and appraisal processes)
  • the ability to meet on-going training and development needs in areas such as clinical care, self-directed learning and leadership.
  • Commitment to releasing practice resource to support Federation-led quality improvement work in return for hosting a Fellow (e.g. releasing a senior GP to work with a local practice/neighbourhood on quality improvement/ peer support/ clinical work).

Accountability/Support

The Fellows will be employed by the CCG for the duration of the programme, however, it is expected that practices will provide the requisite clinical and developmental support for the three sessions of clinical work.

Fellows will be accountable to the nominated practice clinical supervisor for their time spent in the practice.

The CCG will provide a point of contact to provide support to the practice over the course of the programme, and will act as a point of escalation should any issues arise.

Selection Process

Please submit an expression of interest using the attached templateto Una Dalton, Director of Governance and Development for Lambeth.

The closing date for Expressions of Interest isFriday 30thSeptember 2016.

Those practices interested in the programme, will need make a senior representative available as part of the selection process during the week of 3rd October 2016.
