JOB SUMMARY
Under direct supervision by a licensed dentist, performs general dutydental assisting.
PRIMARY DUTIES
- Places and removes rubber dams, matrix bands, and/or retractioncords.
- Applies topical anesthesia, fluoride, and desensitizing agents as instructed by a dentist.
- Removes excess cement.
- Prepares impressions for study models.
- Prepares, places, and removes temporary crowns.
- Constructs athletic mouth guards and customer trays.
- Performs vitality tests.
- Prepares and fits stainless steel crowns.
- Removes sutures.
- Removes and places subsequent periodontal dressing.
- Dries root canals.
- Etches teeth.

- Performs all of the duties of a Dental Assistant I.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED.
EXPERIENCE: Two years experience as a dental assistant.
QUALIFICATION: Qualification by the MarylandState Board of DentalExaminers in Dental Radiology Technology.
CERTIFICATION: Certification as a General Duty Dental Assistant bythe Dental Assisting National Board.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the principles of dental assisting theory,technique, and practice. Skill in procedures using sit-downfour-handed dentistry techniques. Skill in the use of dentalinstruments and equipment. Ability to wear and work in personalprotective equipment. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
OTHER:
Except for qualifications established by law, additionalrelated experience and formal education in which one has gained theknowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of thework of the job class may be substituted for the education orexperience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 collegecredits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Candidates selected for employment may be subjected to medicalinquiries and/or medical examination to determine the ability toperform the job. Employees in this job class must be CPR certified within the first twelve months of employment. Employees in this jobclass must also meet and maintain MarylandState and NationalCertification requirements for dental assisting and dentalradiography.
