Unit: Promote a movie! (links with Multimedia Yr6)
Year:6
Strand: Graphic Design / Multimedia
Time: 9 hours (in total for both parts) /
National Curriculum Objectives:
  • Select, use and combine a variety of software including internet services and a range of digital devices.
  • Present information in a variety of forms.
  • Chn can evaluate and apply information technology including new and unfamiliar technologies.
  • Chn are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.

This unit has been joined with the multimedia strand unit for Year 6. This makes this unit a 9 week unit where chn will be making and editing a movie. When the children have completed their movie (6-7 hours) they should then consider how they might promote this movie to the other children in the school. Consider the possibility of setting up a school cinema where other classes are invited to view the finished Year 6 movies. The Year 6 students need to design promotional posters to advertise their movies, with analysis of popular movie posters being used as a starting point.
You must:
  • Analyse and select common features from well known movie posters.
  • Know how to use screenshots from the movie in your poster (Use ‘Print Screen’ or some other screen capture method).
  • Add a main title.

You should:
  • Add a cast list.
  • Analyse and use colour effectively (light text over dark background or vce versa; don’t use too many colours, etc.)
  • Add an appropriate movie tagline.

You could:
  • Design\Create an original movie poster (without using screen shots).
  • Scan the original image for use in the promotional poster.

Key questions
  • What are the most common features shared by movie posters?
  • How can you capture still images from your movie?
  • How is text/font size important?
  • Why is it important to consider colour?
  • What is a movie tagline? How do they attract the audience’s interest?
