Using the USB Y-cable with the Iomega Portable Hard Drive
Why does the USB cable for my Iomega® eGo™ Portable Hard Drive have two USB connectors?
The Y-cable allows you to use two USB connections to ensure adequate power for your Iomega® portable drive. In some cases, USB-powered devices do not receive enough power from a single USB connection. Using the second USB connection ensures that the device receives adequate power to work properly.
You may not need to use the additional power-only connection in all cases. If the indicator light on the drive glows steadily after connecting the main USB data line, the single USB connection might be providing sufficient power. If the indicator light is dim or blinking, or if you see a message indicating that your USB device is not receiving sufficient power, you should connect the additional power-only connector.
On most Y-cables, the power-only connector is labeled with a sticker showing a lightning bolt. If the Y-cable does not have a label, you can determine which connector is power-only by the cable length. The short, branched USB connection is for power-only. The long USB cable is for both data and power.
