2017 Fashion Design Contest

Instructions to NJDAR Chapters

Dear Chapter Regent & Fashion Design Chairperson:

The 2017 NJDAR Fashion Design Contest information is available on the NJDAR website. I am happy to send you a print copy. Please share the contest packet with the schools in your area as well as local Girl Scout troops, 4 –H groups and other organizations who sponsor youth activities. The contest is open to students in grades 5 – 12.

NEW THIS YEAR: Limit of 8 contest entries in the “Fashion” category per school, troop or group. Each chapter should judge their contest entries and select their top eight(8) fashion entries from each school, troop or group to send to me. NO limit on entries in the “American History” category. 

Here is a quick explanation of the contest categories:

Divisions:

Junior Division:student with less than two years of sewing instruction.

Senior Division: student with more than two years of sewing instruction.

Categories: Students may submit one garment in the “Fashion” category & one garment in the “American History” category.

American History

Fashions from American History: period attire garments from the founding of America up through the early 1900s. These garments can be hand or machine sewn, but the design must be period attire.

Fashion

Separates: one-piece garment such as shorts, skirt, shirt, or top.

Simple Ensemble: two or more coordinated pieces of attire or a one-piece pants outfit.

Dresses: any one-piece unit, which uses a skirt or culottes bottom.

Jackets/Outerwear: lightweight jacket, coat, rain or cold weather jacket, coat or cape.

Party/Prom: garments suitable for formal occasions like a prom.

Score Sheet providescontestants with the garment evaluation rubric. NOT all elements are required

A contestant may submit a maximum of two garments: one garment in the “Fashion” categoryandone garment in the “American History” category. An individual will be eligible for only one category award.

Be sure to add your chapter name and contact informationon the forms before distributing them to the teachers/leaders. Please make sure the entrants understand that the forms must be filled out in ink, completely and LEGIBLY, to be considered for a prize. Chapters should not send in any garments with incomplete or illegible forms.

All entries are due no later than Thursday, March 30, 2017

Please include a chapter check for $10.00, payable to NJDAR with each box of garments to defray the cost of return postage. This is a DAR expense, & should not be paid by the contest entrant.

I really appreciate your support. This is such a great opportunity for young people and you help make it happen! I look forward to working together to give students an activity that gets their hands off their cell phones and onto a sewing machine. It encouragesthem to explore the world of sewing and fashion design… and develop their creative abilities!
