The Welcoming Project will annually award a $500 scholarship to an undergraduate student enrolled in a degree granting institution in August 2018who provides an outstanding contribution to LGBTQ activism.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 1, 2018

Who is eligible for the scholarship?

Any undergraduate student who will be enrolled in a degree granting institution in August of the year of application who presents an outstanding contribution to LGBTQ activism. "LGBTQ activism" can be interpreted broadly, however, successful applicants will have completed (or are currently completing) activities that benefit the LGBTQ community.

What criteria are used in reviewing/judging/selection of recipient?

Both essay quality and letters of recommendation will be utilized as criteria for reviewing, judging, and selecting award recipients.

How will the recipient be selected?

The scholarship recipient will be selected by a committee of supporters of The Welcoming Project.

What comprises the application?

The complete application includes the following elements:

  1. Completed application form (page 3) and typed essay (to be mailed by post by the applicant)
  2. Two letters of recommendation (to be mailed by post by the recommenders with original signatures)

Letters of recommendation should be written by individuals who are familiar with the applicant's LGBTQ activism work.

What is the deadline for submitting an application?

The complete application must be must be received by March 1, 2018. The application form and essay should be mailed by post by the applicant. Please print ONE-SIDED ONLY and DO NOT use staples. Letters of recommendation should be typed, printed, and signed by the recommender and should be mailed by post to:

In 3-5 double-spaced pages, please describe your current involvement with LGBTQ activism and explain why you got involved in LGBTQ activism. In addition, please describe your projected plans for LGBTQ activism in the future and how you plan to achieve those future goals. Finally, explain how you will plan to use the scholarship award money if you are the selected award recipient.
