MENTOR COUPLE

Role of Mentor Couple

  1. Consistently serve as trustworthy Christian role models to single parent families.
  1. Serve as a part of the SPARK team in working with families toward successful completion of their goals.
  1. Initiate and seek to maintain a positive relationship with the single parentsand their children
  1. Work to build relationships with residents by planning and participating in activities of mutual interest
  1. Encourage and support parents and children during challenging times.

Time Commitment

  1. Initial two-year commitment
  2. Active and willing participation in initial training
  3. Active and willing participation in periodic training
  4. Minimum one hour weekly face-to-face social interaction with EACH family.
  5. Conference with program director/designee once a week concerning single parent relationships
  1. Be accessible to parent/child during emergency/crisis moments at all times
  2. Interact regularly with residents in authentic manner (greeting, wave, call, etc.)
  3. Attend planned, monthly social gatherings with other mentor couples and staff
  4. Periodically, with prior notice, serve as relief mentors for additional families while other couples have vacation time
  1. Two months vacation (to be taken in one or two week time periods)

Qualification Requirements

  1. Faithful members of the church of Christ
  2. Financially independent (not dependent on stipend for income)
  3. Physically active
  4. Pattern of maintaining confidentiality
  5. Willing to volunteer ten hours per week toward campus projects
  6. Have health insurance
  7. Have dependable personal transportation with auto insurance
  8. Both spouses drive
  9. Both spouses have a clean driving record for the past five years
  10. Function well as a couple
  11. Each spouse able to function well independently of the other spouse
  12. Positive, cooperative spirit
  13. Structured, yet flexible in routines
  14. Healthy relationship with personal family
  15. Willing to follow organization leadership and adhere to program policies and procedures
  16. Practice of moral, ethical, and legal behavior in all aspects
  17. Clear criminal and neglect/abuse record
  18. Not currently in treatment for substance abuse and have a non-addictive period of at least five years
  1. Not currently in treatment formental disorder or hospitalized for such in the past 3 years

Special Circumstances:

It is understood that family circumstances arise that require the mentor couple to personally interact/ help in the care of family members who are not living with them(i.e. elderly parent(s) or adult children). Please note the following terms for these instances.

  • In the event of an elderly parent or adult child needing to reside with the mentor couple on Potter campus, the mentor couple will meet with the Minister of Family Services and the Supervisor of the single parent ministry PRIOR to their arrival to discuss and receive permission for the extended stay. After receiving permission, the visiting family member may reside on campus for a period of four weeks. This time frame is conditional on the family member willingly abiding by Potter policies and procedures. In the event of willful non-compliance, the visiting family member will be asked to leave.
  • At the end of four weeks the mentor couple will meet with the Minister of Family Services and the Supervisor of the single parent ministry to discuss/evaluate future needs and plans for the visiting family member. The approved plans will be implemented within the following two weeks after the review.
  • If additional concerns arise, these concerns will be addressed with the above-mentioned staff, but an extended stay will last no longer than eight weeks total.
  • Each circumstance will be fairly and objectively considered upon accurate information

being given to the appropriate staff members.
