Abstract: The IT portfolio management concept is much akin to that of modern portfolio theory. While modern portfolio theory employs a mix of financial assets in an attempt to maximize returns and minimize risk to the shareholder, the IT portfolio is targeted toward maximizing organizational strategies and minimizing IT risk to the organization. The IT portfolio achieves this by utilizing the right mix of IT projects that align with organizational strategies targeted at maximizing organizational profitability, increasing revenues and reducing costs while minimizing organizational risks due to IT. The ultimate goal of a portfolio approach towards managing software applications is to give firms the ability to more effectively derive value from information technology in supporting business objectives. Therefore the purpose of this research is to determine what practices are in place to aid in managing the IT portfolio. How those practices impact the risk/return tradeoff within the portfolio and how perceptions of the risk/return tradeoff impact IS effectiveness.
