JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Development Officer

Responsible to:Development Manager

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday 9am-5pm with one unpaid hour for lunch.

This job description is intended as a working document giving a guideline to the major tasks to be performed. It is anticipated that the post will develop, and working practices will change; in order to meet the demands of Salisbury Cathedral, new legislation, and the requirements of Chapter. It is expected that the post holder will contribute to and assist with all future developments.

Overview

To work in conjunction with the Development Manager in raising significant funds for the Cathedral from a variety of other sources.

Principal Tasks

  1. To assist the Development Manager in written and verbal communications with volunteers, donors and to maintain close working relationships with the Friends of Salisbury Cathedral, the Salisbury Cathedral Trust and other stakeholders, particularly in the editing of the newsletter, reports and other communications.
  1. Build on relationships with existing trust supporters, writing reports to meet deadlines and submitting further applications for funding.
  1. Make applications to trusts and foundations that have not previously supported the Cathedral, building on an annual calendar of key prospects.
  1. To research and profile fundraising prospects and their networks, in conjunction with the Development Manager, using a variety of tools including online databases, specialist publications and the personal knowledge of senior volunteers. This may include using external prospect research agencies. To make recommendations for action to the Development Manager.
  1. In collaboration with the Development Manager, organise a cycle of events to further the cultivation of current and prospective donors and the stewardship of existing supporters. To manage all administration of these events (with the assistance of Development Assistant), and to ensure that all events follow an agreed set of protocols.
  1. Manage revenue projects at the Cathedral and ensure continued stewardship.
  1. To keep updated with the external world in relation to fundraising including competitor organisations.
  1. To be aware of, and work within, the values andethics of the Cathedral.
  1. To undertake any other duties that might be required.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential / Desirable
Good experience of fundraising, or transferable skills of managing relationships with donors or customers. / Experience of working in the charity sector.
Evidence of strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce concise and creative copy work. / Experience of training colleagues / volunteers in prospect research.
Experience of prospect research. / Experience of working in a customer driven environment, such as fundraising, sales or marketing.
Used to taking responsibility for own work. / Experience of fundraising databases.
Experience of working to tight timescales and producing high quality accurate work. / Experience in organising both intimate and large scale prospect and / or fundraising events.

Skills

Essential / Desirable
Excellent communication and presentation skills required to build relationships with potential donors. / Understanding of business practices; able to apply commercial and financial principles to improve the success of fundraising.
Able to tailor communications to suit needs of target audience.
High standard of computer literacy (Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook and the Internet).
Excellent time management and prioritisation skills.
Meticulous attention to detail.
