Assist neighborhood families, individuals, fellow students, and YOU(!) prepare and e-file tax returns.
What is Tax-Aide?
  • Students enrolled in HCC’s Tax-Aide program prepare and file federal income tax forms for low-income families at no charge.

  • Volunteers will be trained this winter to work at HCC’s tax site from January
    until April 15, 2007.

What is in it for me?
  • Make your résumé and university applications stand out from the crowd.

  • Get a jump on others and do better in taxation courses at the university level.

  • 2 hours of HCC elective credit is available for students successfully completing the program.

  • Prepare and electronically file your own, friends’ & family’s tax returns.

Do I have to be an experienced tax preparer to participate?
  • No! Volunteer tax preparers attend 30 hours of training. At training, learn tax law, learn to electronically prepare and file the necessary federal tax forms using TaxWise software. Then pass an IRS prepared examination.

  • This is a great way to expand your résumé and help your community!

Who will I be helping?
  • You will help workers and students with earnings below $38,348 claim the tax credits they’re entitled to for the 2006tax year. In some cases, help significantly boost a family’s annual income.

  • The most valuable tax benefit is the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which can be worth as much as $4,536 to families with two or more children—even if they pay no income tax. Many low-income workers are also eligible for the Child Care Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and college tuition credits.

  • Without quality tax preparation assistance, many workers and students fail to claim these tax benefits.

What kind of commitment is required?
  • Tax preparation volunteers will be required to attend 30 hours of training in January (consecutive Fridays at HCC).

  • In exchange for this free training, volunteers will be asked to staff HCC’s Tax-Aidesite for a minimum of30 hours.

  • HCC’s tax site will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 1:15 until 4:00pmTO BE DETERMINED.
