BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Awakening Smiles Initiative is a non profit making, nongovernmental organisation that was formed purposely to help the most marginalised, disadvantaged and neglected children aged between 0 and 19.

Vision

Education, Basic Health, Taking action against vulnerable children, Sensitizing Children and communities about HIV/AIDS and vocational Training.

Mission

To form a functional Cohesive and committed NGO that will continuously help vulnerable children, fight the wide spread of HIV/AIDS and enable them to have improved standards of living.

Goal

Taking action against vulnerable children, HIV & AIDS and the sexual exploitation of women and children.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Teenage pregnancy in the rural communities in Uganda is increasing at a high rate. 1 of 3 teenage girls gets pregnant willingly or unwillingly get pregnant and the rate is increasingly alarming. This has led to an increased number of school drop outs increasing the number of prostitutes as many of them lack the skills for employment. A few who manage to get informal employment as house maids are mistreated, work without pay, underpaid and most times, sexually exploited by their male employers.

The HIV/AIDS pandemic, abject poverty in the rural communities, domestic violence, and continued child abuse, sexual harassment to the girl child, gender discriminations, forced marriages, and neglected children have led to the increase in teenage unwanted pregnancy in an effort to search for survival. They turn to prostitution, drug abuse and robbery to support themselves, their babies and families.

Teenage girls between the age of 13 to 19 especially orphans, some teenagers who head families, or who stay with their senile grand parents have turned to prostitution in a way to get money for their family support. Some others who are being neglected due to domestic violence and abject poverty look at men as their source of income for survival. This has left these teenage girls vulnerable to unwanted pregnancies and HIV/AIDS.

Prostitution, deaths due to abortions and HIV AIDS, drug abuse, robbery, girl child trafficking has turned to a major threat in our community.

On realising that the responsibility to protect the status of the human life and dignity lies on our shoulder, there arose an idea to take care of the teenage mothers by putting in place a skills training scheme to transform their lives forever.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

This project is a hands on training, intended to pass on vocational training and skills to 60 most disadvantaged teenage mothers to improve their socioeconomic lives forever.

20 teenage mothers will be trained in Tailoring. 20 in Hair dressing and 20 in various craft skills which will include: Jewellery like earrings, necklaces, bracelets and fingerings, Bags and wallets, doormats, belts, sponges like bathing , washing and scrubbing sponges, toys and sandals.

We will use expert local artisans whom we have already contacted, in the rural communities where these teen mothers reside. This helps to avoid transport costs, it’s cost effective and they can attend training with their children. Our expert team selects and allocates the teen mothers accordingly and Awakening Smiles Initiative will meet the training fees from this project fund. The training will last four months and will start in August. The project will be carried out in the very rural areas of Lusanja, Nangabo,in Wakiso Distict, Kabagala, Kkoko in Luweero Distict and Kyayaaye, Busaana and Nfuufu in Kayunga Districts of Uganda.

Immediately after interviews and graduation, the trainees will be given technical tools as capital to enable those staff off as self employed. They can look after their children and at the same time save money for their future or even go back for formal education.
