SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MEETING
A regular meeting of the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission was held on Thursday, September 15, 2016, at 12:00 p.m, at the Fairbanks Senior Center Conference Room.
Commissioner Lal called the meeting to order at 12:00p.m.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Commissioner Fleeksmoved to approve the agenda as written. Commissioner Hunterseconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
CommissionerWoodmoved and Commissioner Hunterseconded to accept the minutes as written. Motion passed unanimously.
APPEARANCES & COMMUNICATIONS
Darlene Supplee, Executive Director of the Fairbanks Senior Center reported on the status of the Senior Center. A new program began on September 1st to place a University social work intern in the Senior Center. The long term goal is to have a number of interns and a paid social worker on staff at the Senior Center. A Senior Core Grant of $225,000 was awarded to the Senior Center to support volunteers. A renovation of the building entry way is scheduled to improve traffic flow.
Commissioner Wood recommended everyone join the Senior Center and encourage others to join.
STAFF REPORTS
Tiffany Corrigan reported that 430 seniors attended Senior Recognition Day in May. The summer events: June picnic and pot luck picnic, July walking club, Tanana Valley Fair and trips to the Farmer’s Market were well attended.
OLD BUSINESS
The 2017 Senior Recognition Day is set for May 4, 2017, earlier than usual due to scheduling conflicts. The lunch price will increase from $11.25 to $11.75, with further increases expected. A discussion was held on moving the event to a different location to control costs.

COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE CHAIR
Commissioner Lal was appointed to a four year term on the Commission of Aging. He has also been recommended for a position on the Governor’s Council on Aging. His family has established a scholarship to the University Social Work program. He recently celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary.
COMMISSIONER REPORTS & COMMENTS
Commissioner Hunterissued an invitation to the Santa Senior Center in North Pole.
Commissioner Delaune announced that Access Alaska will administer a nursing home transition grant designed to help seniors return to independent living.
Commissioner Woodexcused herself.
Commissioner Fleeksreiterated the need to have acentral resource for information about programs and services available to seniors.
Commissioner Sanderson hadno comment.
Commissioner Sevier announced that Santa’s Senior Center has begun a dinner-to-go program one evening a month.
Commissioner Lal commented on the Robert’s rules training session.

FUTURE MEETING SCHEDULE
The next scheduled meeting will be October 20, 2016 at 12 pm in the Big Dipper Conference Room.
