He chaired “Career Development Workshop” during SAPA 2001 annual meeting, and co-chaired/organized “2002-2005 SAPA Drug Discovery and Development Symposium”. He led Review Committee for speaker selection for the BioForum and other exchange programs in China. He has been serving as a SAPA Newsletter editor since 2002, and SAPA website Director since 2004. Statement: It is my great honor to be nominated as a SAPA president-elect candidate this year. As a founding member of SAPA, I have witnessed the dynamic growth of this organization. Thanks to the strong leadership of SAPA leaders and support from all SAPA members, SAPA has grown from a few dozen members in the tri-state area to near three thousand members nationwide with three chapters in US and one club in China. If elected, I will continue working with SAPA leaders and members to build an even stronger organization.
As a candidate for president-elect, I believe that serving its members is the basic principal of SAPA by-laws and number one priority of SAPA leader’s job. If elected, I will work with SAPA leaders closely and make our best effort to recruit more members and provide more services to our members for their career and business development, both in U.S. and China. More specifically, we will continue organizing and sponsoring scientific meetings, trainings, job affairs and social gatherings. We will expand scientific exchange programs with Chinese pharmaceutical industry, academia and government to give our members more opportunities to interact with our pharmaceutical colleagues in China. Second, I would like to continue providing SAPA’s service to the local communities and build up a good relationship with other professional organizations. SAPA has done a great job in this aspect, and we will continue doing our best. Third, to ensure the healthy growth of SAPA as a whole, I would like to further strengthen the relationship between SAPA headquarters and its chapters, and make sure that chapters’ voices and concerns are heard and addressed.
I am confident that, with increasing member participation and support from all chapters and communities, SAPA will continue to be one of the best American-Chinese professional organizations. Together, we can make another successful year in SAPA history!
John Wang. Ph. D. John jointed SAPA in 1995 and founded SAPA-West in 1998 with a small group of local activists. He also served as its 3rd President and Advisory Committee member ever since. Since its establishment, SAPA-West has quickly grown into a society of over 700 members that are working in over 60 bio/pharmaceutical companies throughout the greater San Francisco bay area. It becomes the largest and most active society for pharmaceutical professionals with Chinese heritage in the area and has built up multiple connections with research institutes and companies both in China and US. In 2005 John was elected to SAPA BD and is current serving his first term in the BD. Besides SAPA, John is also a member of Society of Biomolecular Screening (SBS). He was the Co-Program Chair of 2003 Annual Conference and Exhibition of SBS in Portland, OR. He has also served as the Chairman of SBS Small Grant Review Committee since 2002. He has twice received the "Presidential Award", the highest service award by the Society in 2002 and 2004, respectively.
Dr. John Wang is currently the Associate Director of Drug Discovery in Chiron Corp. Emeryville, USA. Where he has been working on HT drug discovery and recently discovery ADME/PK. Before joining Chiron in 1995, he held the position as the Head of Lead Discovery in Mimotopes (Melbourne, Australia), the company pioneered the concept of Combinatorial chemistry. John has been working in drug discovery since 1988. He published over 40 research papers and chapters and is the author and co-author of several patents. Dr. Wang was graduated from China Pharmaceutical University (Nanjing, China) and received his doctoral degree in pharmacology from "Mario Negri" Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milano, Italy. He then worked in University of Arizona at Tucson as a postdoc fellow from 1995 to 1998 before joined Mimotopes.
John had a long time vision to be part of a nationwide organization for Chinese pharmaceutical professionals in US. That was the key reason he decided to join other professionals in SAPA to form SAPA-West instead of an independent regional organization. Since then he has been working closely with SAPA EC and BD members both in HQ and in regional Chapters to bring the organization to its greatest potential. If elected, John will follow the path of previous Presidents to continue developing SAPA into a truly professional and mainstream organization. While encouraging and supporting many local initiatives, John will also facilitate communications and collaborations between HQ and Chapters to reach the goal of “One mission, One voice”. John is also planning to continue working with BD members on policies and long term strategy planning for SAPA.
