Questions Posed for Call:

1)  How receptive are patients to the NP/PA role?

·  Most patients are satisfied with NP

·  Most NPs do not do initial visits

·  Most have patient see MD at least annually; some alternate NP and MD visits

2)  How much is diabetes education a part of your role as NP/PA?

·  Most do some as part of E&M visit but also refer for education

·  If patients need extensive education, some let educator finish visit and use expanded time code for E&M

·  Some who have done lots of education in past have trouble giving up that role

3)  How do you market your services at the Affiliate?

·  Everyone on staff reinforces team approach and NP as part of team

4)  How do high volume Affiliates manage their volumes? (see benchmark report attached)

·  Elaine reviewed how percent productivity is calculated; go to Joslin website for definitions www.joslin.org or talk to your Center Administrator

·  Most NPs do 30 minute follow up and 60 minute new patient appointment

·  Sandra at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance does 20 minute follow ups and no new patients, about 20% endocrine which are quicker; her site also has open scheduling where a group of patients are given same time slot and see whichever provider is available; they have high no show rate and some patients who drop in and expect to be seen; patients sometimes have long wait; they have largely Latino population and patients are used to waiting; she sees 20-25/day

No time for rest of questions

5)  Are there state licensing regulations that are a challenge to your role at the Affiliate?

6)  When you recommend patients utilize education services at your Affiliate, how do you “sell” it to them?

7)  Describe any documentation challenges you face and how you overcome them.
