Their Eyes Were Watching God: End of the Novel

#rabies #hurricane #ohjanie

PRE-SOCRATIC SEMINAR:

  • In your groups, you will be preparing questions that will guide our seminar. Prepare discussion-evoking questions for the following categories:

1)Motif/Symbol: One discussion-evoking question on the significance ofyour assigned motif or symbol.

2)Connection to texts: In your supplementary packet, read “Noblesse Oblige” and “People.” Create a discussion question comparing or contrasting the characters or conflicts in Their Eyes Were Watching God to anything you have read this year (possibly even these poems).

  • Each question must include a page number reference or article reference.
  • For each question, prepare 3-4 sentences of response or thoughts to your group’s question. Each group member should have their own copy of the questions and their own responses.
  • People with fall-winter season birthdays (October, November, December, January, February) should email Delacruz ONE of their favorite questions (can be from partner, quiz, or one of the questions you created today).

DURING THE SEMINAR:

  1. A thread leader will start the thread by reading the question, offering some of their own thoughts on the question, and opening the thread to the class.
  2. The last speaker will call upon the next speaker in the discussion.
  3. Each student needs to speak in class and contribute to discussion.
  4. Active participation will be assessed through your verbal contributions and discussion notes.
  5. Use the following starters to collegially respond to your peers. The following are some appropriate ways to start your response.

“I understand ______.”

“From what I understand, you are saying ______.”

“I have a different perspective on ______.” (In lieu of “I disagree”)

  1. The thread leader is responsible for closing the thread when the thread seems appropriately exhausted. The thread leader will briefly synthesize the major ideas discussed during the thread. Other class members should check their notes with the thread leader’s verbal synthesis.
  2. In the case of premature awkward silences, the thread leader and/or teacher has the liberty to call for clockwise participation from the last speaker.

POST-SEMINAR REFLECTION: (ONLY ONE POST-SEMINAR FOR SEMINAR #1 and SEMINAR #2)

  1. Pick one peer’s point that was made during the seminar.
  2. Support or refute that point.
  3. Find at least one piece of evidence in the text to support your claims and find a meaningful way to connect your claim, evidence, analysis, and respective warrant. You must cite your evidence using MLA format.
  4. This should be one paragraph (6-8 sentences).
