Nishikawara Undergraduate 2013 Application Instructions

Submission instructions:

1.  All application components are due by Thursday, February 28th at 5 pm. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. See checklist below.

2.  All student application materials should be compiled as a single .pdf file, and sent as an e-mail attachment addressed to Carolyn Rutter at .

3.  The application materials must be identified in the subject line of the e-mail message using the format: Lastname_Nishikawara_Undergraduate_Application

4.  The sponsoring Faculty must send also a recommendation letter directly to , The recommendation may be sent either in the body of the e-mail or as an attachment. The e-mail should be identified in the subject line of the e-mail message using the format: StudentLastname_Nishikawara_Undergraduate_Recommendation.

Recommendations are also due by Thursday, February 28th at 5 pm.

Application components:

____ Copy of most recent grade report (official transcript is NOT required)

____ One-page cover letter (maximum 500 words) explaining your motivation for applying for summer research funding and plans for future study

____ Research proposal of no more than three double-spaced pages of text (12 point font with 1” margins). Figures may be included, but must be within in the 3 page limit. The proposal must include the following sections.

1.  Title

2.  Background

3.  Research question(s) to be addressed

4.  Methods

5.  Training plan/timeline (rough description of how the work will be completed in 10 weeks)

6.  Significance of the research

7.  Anticipated need for supplies (not to exceed $500)

8.  Cited References (not included in the 3 page limit)

Please note that this proposal must be original work; although you will be working closely with a faculty member, it is not appropriate to use text directly from the faculty member’s proposals or articles. If this research work is part of a larger, collaborative project, you should clearly explain which portion of it is yours and how your project differs from others’ work.

I will submit a final report of my project by August 16, 2013 and will present my data at the Physiology and Cell Biology Research Day in March of 2014.

I have read the materials and requirements for this fellowship program. I will cover all costs of materials exceeding the allotted $500 and will ensure that the student receives all required training and all IACUC and IBC protocols have been approved.
