“The phrase ‘media circus’ must have been coined in New Hampshire in the days leading up to the primary. After Iowa the media resettles in New Hampshire and then multiplies about three times over, or at least it seems that way. I remember walking down the street in Concord the Sunday before Primary Day and I looked to my left and Anderson Cooper was standing about three feet away reporting live. A few minutes later I saw Sean Hannity on another street corner and Carl Cameron in front of me amidst a throng of passionate supporters from just about every campaign, all anxious to get their candidate’s sign on live TV.”

“The media attention was definitely one of the coolest parts of the trip. The media was everywhere! We met Chris Matthews from ‘Hardball,” among others. . . . In Manchester there were camera crews in all corners. I imagine this is what Los Angeles looks like with all of the celebrities. . . I felt like a celebrity with all of the media attention that the Road to the White House class received. . . After the 10 days, I developed the skill that I call ‘posing for the media,’ meaning that I learned to look natural in each shot. . .”

“… I saw Chris Matthews from Hardball and snapped a quick photo with him. This is what I love about being up here for this. I mean I was in a crowd next to Michael Steel and Chris Matthews, and then Sean Hannity walked right by me with a microphone in hand and a camera crew in tow… He put the camera on me and the mike in front of me and interviewed me briefly about what I was doing here. I did not wake up this morning thinking I would be interviewed by Sean Hannity. The crowd continued to get thick and throughout the morning I ran into Carl Cameron from FOX News, CNN’s Anderson Cooper, CBS’s Bob Schieffer, and former Senator Phil Gramm.”

Media Placements

Not only did students have the opportunity to meet the presidential candidates and the various celebrity surrogates that came to New Hampshire to stump on their behalf, but also our students began to feel like celebrities themselves.

St. Petersburg Times photographer Martha Rial was “embedded” with our class up in New Hampshire. Her photos appeared in a full-page spread in the Sunday Times, and additional photos were posted on the St. Petersburg Times website. The link is posted on our class website, www.stpt.usf.edu/whitehouse

Students were interviewed by journalists from newspapers and television stations from around the country, and, indeed, from around the world.

Here in Tampa Bay, our students were featured in
