YEAR GROUP: UKS2 Yr5/YrA TERM: Spring 1 LESSON: 6
THEME: Looking Forward
LINKS TO PREVIOUS LEARNING
This lesson links to previous lessons on wants and needs and budgeting.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE (WALT)
To understand that:
·  A trip or an outing costs money
·  we need to make choices about our spending
·  we can’t always have everything that we might want
LEARNING OUTCOMES (WILF)
I know that going on a trip costs money.
I can explain some of the things involved in planning a trip.
I have thought about where I would like to go and how much it might cost.
KEY VOCABULARY
Trip, outing, cost, entry fee, budget, transport.
RESOURCES/SUPPORT
·  Catriona’s Big Day Out video, which can be downloaded for free from: www.teachers.tv/videos/catriona-big-day-out
·  Internet access and/or a range of leaflets about local-ish attractions, e.g. Longleat
This lesson contains various activities about planning a trip that you might want to follow-up as a more extended piece of work and take the pupils on the outing that they have planned and raised money to pay for.
TEACHING/LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Introduction
Watch Catriona’s Big Day Out (www.teachers.tv/videos/catriona-big-day-out). Discuss the ideas raised in the film about budgeting and making choices.
MAIN TEACHING AND LEARNING
Activity 1: Whole Class Activity
Ask pupils to think of some local-ish attractions they would like to visit, e.g. Longleat. Get them to come up with a list of about 5 ideas in rank order. Take feedback and agree on the top idea (you might want to have a 2nd or 3rd choice in reserve).
Activity 2: Whole Class Activity
Split the class into 4 mixed-ability groups. Each group will be responsible for planning part of the trip. The various groups need to:
·  research the distances involved and decide whether it should be a whole day trip, you could use a route planner e.g. www.theaa.com , www.rac.co.uk and look at train timetables etc. They could also explore how long it would take to get there and back by various modes of transport etc
·  consider what is involved in going on a day trip (transport, entry fees, lunch, etc).
·  research the opening times and cost of travel and any entry fees, decide how long they would want to spend there
·  design a picnic for the class
Take feedback from each of the groups. How much would it cost altogether? How could they raise the money.
Activity 3: Optional
Ideally you would take the pupils on the trip that they are planning and could link this to a fund-raising idea so that they can raise the money to pay for it, e.g. a £10 challenge where the pupils buy the resources they need to create an item or service and then sell their products or service, or hold a music show, or make & sell items at an Easter fete etc.
.
If you decide to go on the trip, small groups of pupils could:
·  research prices for a picnic using online shopping sites, e.g. www.sainsburys.co.uk allows you to research prices without having to register or login
·  apply mathematical skills e.g. a loaf costing 95p makes eight sandwiches – how much per sandwich, what about the fillings?
·  Be taken out to buy the ingredients for the picnic
·  Make the picnic
Extension activities/discussions:
·  Compare the costs of ready prepared sandwiches etc with home made.
DIFFERENTIATION
More able pupils can explore the options for some of the alternative ideas suggested.
PLENARY
Discuss what is involved in going on a trip and which things need to be paid for. Lead pupils to the realisation that going on a trip or outing is a treat.
KEY QUESTIONS
1.  Where could we go?
2.  How could we get there?
3.  How much does it cost?
4.  How much money would we need to raise?
5.  How could we raise the money?
ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING
Identify which pupils who feedback to the whole class; offer suggestions; justify their decisions; respond to points made by others; amend their ideas in light of new ideas.
CROSS CURRICULAR LINKS
Speaking and Listening opportunities
·  Pupils share their personal views with a group and, through feedback, with the whole class. Pupils have the opportunity to express opinions and negotiate so that the group can reach an agreement.
Mathematical skills
·  Pupils use calculating skills to work out various costs
Food Technology
·  Planning and preparing a picnic
ICT
·  Researching information
HOME LEARNING ACTIVITY
Discuss with parents/carers the possibility of going on a family outing which s/he will organise, similar to Catriona.
