Dear Friends in Christ,
We’re all familiar with the idea of getting a good return on an investment. Whether we’re saving for a rainy day or for our retirement years, we all hope that what we’ve put aside will grown and that we’ve been wise in our investments. In today’s gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the master who entrusts his property to his slaves. Each one is given an amount ‘accounting to his abilities’, and the master expects them to use the amount wisely.
God has entrusted us with gifts to be used in the service of the kingdom. This life provides us with the opportunities to invest our talents in a wise, prudent and generous way. We do this in our families, at work, in society and in our parish communities, every time we act out of love for God and others.
In the parable, the slave who hid the talent feared the wrath of his master. Fear cripples the Christian soul and stifles God’s life-giving vision for the world. On the contrary, those who took their talents and used them wisely are praised by the master for having produced according to their ability. Ingenuity and foresight allowed them to use their gifts in the service of the kingdom. May today’s celebration of eucharist bring us to action so that in God’s retirement plan, eternal life, we may find the fullness of peace and joy.
