OFFICIAL RESUME

When you are ready to apply for college admission and for scholarships during your senior year, you will need to have an accurate resume prepared. Beginning now and continuing through your senior year, I will have an individual work folder in my office containing the information that you give me. You will update your resume information for me at least once a year, and you will produce an official resume during English 4 that will be sent with all of your college applications. If you should be transferred to another school, come get your file to use at your new school.

In preparing your preliminary resume, please do not hesitate to include all experiences that you have had that would represent you as a trustworthy, hard-working person of good character. For example, babysitting and yard work that you have done should be included in your resume. Most students don’t give themselves enough credit for what they have accomplished.

If you sense that you do not have enough “credentials” at this time, you should make a strong effort to improve your participation. Colleges and people with scholarship money like to work with students who have shown that they will work hard for their success.

Attached is a sample format that matches the requirements of the Apply Texas Application. Please use this example to write resume. At anytime you may update your sheet by contacting me in person or by leaving a note of explanation.

HINTS FOR A WORTHWHILE RESUME

Education: List your high schools – beginning with the present and working backward.

List advanced courses, Honors, Pre/AP, AP, and Dual credit courses.

List your senior year courses.

List any specialty courses that make a connection to your intended major.

Work Experience: Work from the present to the past. Include dates. Don’t think that a small job

doesn’t count.

Activities: Group them by theme (School, Church, Volunteer, etc.).

Include the dates or grade level. Work from the present to the past.

Make sure the reader knows what it is. For example, no one outside of our community knows what a “C” Award is.

Awards and

Achievements: Work from the present to the past. Group in themes such as sports or drama, etc. Include dates.

References: You can list the names and addresses of 2-3 people who would give you a GOOD reference should they be contacted. Be sure to ask them in advance if you can use their names for this purpose.

You have my permission to use me as a reference.

Hint: Don’t bore your reader to death but do give enough specific information and descriptions.

If you list an activity by name, and there is a possibility that your reader won’t recognize what it is, write a brief description beside it. (Impact Partners – students volunteering to work with handicapped children.)
