A RESOLUTION honoring the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

WHEREAS, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was established in 1908 at Howard University, in Washington, D.C., becoming the first Greek-letter organization in the United States of America formed solely by and for black female college students; and

WHEREAS, the idea of an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was conceived by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle of St. Louis, Missouri, who envisioned the sorority as a mechanism for significantly enriching the campus experience of those participating students; and

WHEREAS, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, over the years, has enjoyed a diverse and complex existence, from providing assistance to black female students on college campuses across the country, to aiding in the improvement of socioeconomic conditions in cities, counties, and states throughout the United States of America; and

WHEREAS, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is a service oriented organization with more than 170,000 undergraduate and alumnae members in over 950 chapters in the United States, the Caribbean, Germany, Seoul Korea, West Africa, England, and Japan; and

WHEREAS, the chief aim of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has been “service to all mankind” and the primary purpose has been to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to improve the social structure of the race, and to keep an interest in college-life alive within the alumnae; and

WHEREAS, the Beta Upsilon Omega, Beta Gamma Omega, Eta Rho, Omicron Sigma Omega, Pi Lambda Omega, and Eta Omega chapters each exemplify the high standards of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. This honorable body does hereby express its heartfelt appreciation to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for its devotion to black female college students throughout the United States of America.

Section 2. This venerable institution does hereby honor the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for its service to black female college students in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Section 3. This august association does hereby recognize the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for its service to the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Section 4. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in honor of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
