Teacher: Ms. Gliozzi

Introduction: This year will be an exciting adventure through the world of Mathematics. We will be learning how to think, talk and calculate mathematically. We will also learn how to analyze problems, gather relevant data and solve. This course will be your most interesting and challenging course depending upon your interest, motivation, ability and self discipline this year.

Course Texts:1st Semester and 2nd Semester Dolciani – McDougal Littell Algebra Structure and Method Book 1

Course Required Student Supplies:must be brought to class daily

  • 1 ½” 3 ring binder with dividers and lined paper
  • Textbook
  • Pencils & erasers
  • Highlighter
  • Red pen

Course Outline:

  1. Algebra expressions, equations, inequalities, one step and two step algebra process
  2. Absolute value, square roots, percentages, proportions, probability, odds
  3. Formulas: perimeter, area, volume of squares, rectangles, triangles, polygons, circles also distance, temperature conversion, interest (simple and compound), discounts
  4. Linear equations: Graphs, plotting ordered pairs, T-charts, slope, point slope formula, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, inequalities
  5. Systems of Linear Equations, systems of linear inequalities
  6. Polynomials: quadratic equations, quadratic formula, factoring quadratic equations
  7. Binomials: special products, FOIL
  8. Factoring Variable expressions and equations: multiplying, dividing and simplifying
  9. Pythagorean Theorem: triangles, midpoint and distance formulas

Absences and Tardies:Always check the website for missed assignments. Only those with legal absences will be allowed to make up work for credit. Remember that three illegal absences may cause you to be dropped from this course. FOR AN EXCUSED ABSENCE YOU HAVE AS MANY DAYS AS YOU WERE ABSENT TO COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain any notes or worksheets that were assigned on the day of an absence. If you miss class due to an activity, the missed work must be turned in the following day. Students are responsible for arranging a make-up date with the teacher.

Tardies are a disruption that will hurt your grade. If being tardy is a repetitive problem (2 or more) a morning detention will be assigned. If tardies continue to be an issue, then further disciplinary actions will be taken.

If a student has an illegal absence (a “cut”) they will be started on an attendance contract. If a student has 3 illegal absences, they will be dropped form the class with an F.

  1. Arrive to class on time and with materials

Failure to meet these standards of behavior will result in disciplinary action: AM detention, Saturday school and/or parent consultations.

Daily Class Procedures:

  1. Class starts when the bell rings
  2. Complete starter exercise on the board in math binder
  3. Have previous nights homework ready for review, self-correct and turn in
  4. No spiral paper will be accepted (3 hole punched line or graph paper only)
  5. Actively engage in lesson by taking notes, asking questions and completing practice problems
  6. Check white board for homework assignment and write in planner
  7. If there is time start your homework, ask questions

Assignments: All assignments must be turned in on time, neat, legible and complete. Late work will not be accepted. Pencil is required for all math work (NO pen). Your full name, date, period and assignment name must be located at the top of an 8 ½ x 11 inch paper for full credit. A record of daily assignments is located on my school loop web page.

School Loops: all of the homework assignments and information regarding quizzes and tests can be found in school loops. Grades are posted weekly.

Communication: is the best way to contact me.

Grading: Grades are available on school loops. Parents and students will be asked to log on and create an id and password. Access is 24x7. Weighting of semester grades are: FINAL -15%, Quizzes & Tests – 65% Homework - 20%.

Grades are A = 94-100% A- = 90-93%, B+ = 87-89%, B = 83-86% B- = 80-82%, C+ = 77-79%, C = 73-76%, C- = 70-72%, D+ = 67-69%, D = 63-66%, D- = 60-62% and F = <60% Grades consist of homework 20%, quizzes and tests 65% and the final 15%

Extra Credit: Extra credit may be offered from time to time, however do not count onit to salvage a low/failing grade. Theses opportunities will be announced in the class, posted on the board and posted on school loops.
