Responsible Recycling Event this SATURDAY

The 9th District and the Energy Pros are holding a One Stop Drop Responsible Recycling Event on Saturday, May 10th from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm at Louisville Water Tower Park, home of the WaterWorks Museum, 3005 River Road. This drive-thru event is FREE. While sponsored by District 9, any citizens in Louisville may participate at this FREE event. Businesses may not drop off items at this event. FREE Shakespeare in the Park

Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh, Councilman David Tandy, and White Clay Consulting present Kentucky Shakespeare’s Shakespeare in the Park’s production of HAMLET in Story Avenue Park, 1519 Story Avenue on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. Considered by many to be Shakespeare’s greatest work, this thrilling and deeply moving 90-minute, 8-actor adaptation follows the story of tragic hero Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Kentucky Shakespeare is the largest in-school touring arts education provider in the Commonwealth and the oldest free Shakespeare festival in the United States. 6th Annual Buy Local First Fair

The Louisville Independent Business Alliance (LIBA) will host the 6th Annual Buy Local Fair Sunday, May 18, 2014, at The Louisville Water Tower Park from 12:00pm - 6:00pm. The fair will host a variety of local businesses, bands, artists and craftspeople, community organizations, and farmers. The event will feature concerts, a cooking competition, a wide variety of Louisville’s diverse and local food scene, retail vendors, a KY Brewers Guild craft beer tent, and a children's area sponsored by Louisville Water and the Kentucky Science Center. Admission is free. Parking is $5/car. Bicycles are encouraged and free (bicycle valet is sponsored by VO2 Multisports. Four area Zumba instructors will keep festival-goers in shape with a live Zumba demonstration, and local bands Bookshelf, Karston Nelson, Small Time Napoleon, and Field of Kings will keep the groove going. RYE on Market will defend its title in this year’s Iron Chef-style cooking competition against Decca.

The mission of the Buy Local Fair is to provide a venue that fosters cooperation, cross-pollination and strength in numbers for locally-owned, independent entities. By bringing together customers of various businesses, farms, craftspeople and bands unique to the Louisville-area, we expose a variety of endeavors to new audiences and increase business for all.

2014 Langan Award to Carla Ruschival

The Kentucky School for the Blind(KSB) will present the prestigious Paul J. Langan Distinguished Service Award to Carla Ruschival during the school’s 172nd Founder’s Day Program on Fri., May 9, 2014at 12 PM in Richie Auditorium, 1867 Frankfort Avenue. The program is open to the public.

Ruschival, a Clifton neighborhood resident, is a graduate of KSB and the University of Louisville. She is a devoted school advocate and is an avid supporter of its various activities and alumni association. Her work has made an impact in the community where she has advocated for changes that have made for safer travel for pedestrians who are blind and visually impaired. She is the host of Sound Prints, an audio magazine program that features news and events of interest to people who are blind and visually impaired that is aired on Sunday through ACB Radio and on weekends through Kentucky Central Radio Eye. At the state level, she represents the KY Council of the Blind on the Office for the Blind Statewide Rehabilitation Council. Nationally, she serves as treasurer for the American Council of the Blind, one of the largest blind/visually impaired consumer organizations.

The Langan Award was established in 1992 and is dedicated to former superintendent Paul J. Langan (1945-56) in recognition of his outstanding service and constructive leadership. His innovative approach to education established the foundation for continued improvement of the education of blind and visually impaired children at the school.

World Affairs Council Hosing Opportunities

Did you know that the World Affairs Council (WAC) brings more than 200 international adult and youth visitors to Kentucky throughout the year? Visitors from all over the world come here for professional and cultural programs to compare and learn from American counterparts, share their own cultural programs and take home innovative ideas to improve the world.This work is not possible without caring citizen diplomats like WAC volunteers. To continue ensuring the warm and hospitable experience that makes Kentucky famous, they need your help as homestay hosts and volunteers for several upcoming programs.
WAC Provides:

·  Professional and cultural programming (delegates will attend meetings during the day).

·  All necessary transportation to and from meetings.

·  An in-home orientation for hosts.

·  Orientation and cultural programming for visitors.

Homestay Host Responsibilities:

·  Provide a private sleeping area.

·  Include the delegate(s) in breakfast and dinner.

Include the delegate(s) in planned evening activities and share your city with them!

·  Open World Russia – Healthcare May 23 - 31, 2014. WAC is seeking volunteer(s) to host 1-2 delegates from Russia.These visitors will be traveling to Louisville on a healthcare program through Open World, an international professional exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Library of Congress.This program brings emerging leaders from Eurasia to the U.S. to explore their professional theme, American civil society and community life.Delegates include hospital directors, emergency medical specialists, a trauma research fellow, a cardiac surgeon and more.

·  Russia:Accountable Governance (Young Professionals) June 6 - 14, 2014. There will be 6 delegates and 1 facilitator. Hosts needed for anOpen World Russia program on the topic of Accountable Governance. The delegates come from a variety of backgrounds relating to government accountability and have been selected as delegates on this important topic.

Saturday, May 10: The American Printing House for the Blind (APH), 1839 Frankfort Avenue is excited to announce an event, Exploring with All the Sensesfrom 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The park-like grounds of APH are a delight for all the senses. Children and their parents will take time for a sensory exploration-- smelling the bright spring greenery, feeling the rough bark of trees and the smooth stone walls, identifying birds by their songs. Our guest leader for this event is a naturalist from the Louisville Nature Center. The event is free, but there are limited spaces, so reservations are required.
