Aggregate data file

Glossary

Note: All demographic data come from the Institute of National Statistics Geography and Informatics/Instituto Nacional de Estadítstica Geografía e Informática(INEGI) 2000 Census. The migration statistics were prepared by the National Council of Population / Consejo Nacional de Población (CONAPO), using a subsample of the INEGI 2000 Census that included a more detailed battery of questions on migration. Presidential election data were obtained from the IFE website and are updated as of August 27, 2006.

Below are descriptions of some terms used in the data file:

Health Insurance: The INEGI term is “derechohabiencia a servicios de salud,” described as whether people may receive medical attention in public or private health facilities as a consequence of employee benefit power, membershipin the armed forces, and having relatives designated as beneficiaries, or for having acquired an optional insurance at the Mexican Social Security Institute /Institutio Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS).

Average Grade Completed: The result of dividing the sum of all the grades successfully completed -starting with first grade up to the highest grade achieved- by all the people ages 15 and older. It includes the population age 15 and older who have not successfully completed first grade; it excludes the population age 15 and older whose education information is not specified.

Labor force: The population age 12 and older that were either employed or unemployed in the reference week.

Employed: Person age 12 or older who performed any economic activity, for at least one hour in the reference week in exchange for a wage, salary, or other type of payment in money or in kind. This designation includes the people who were employed but did not work during the reference week for temporary reasons as long as they have not severed ties with their employment (that is, vacation, maternity leave, illness, bad weather, etc). It also includes people who helped in the family farm, factory, store or shop without receiving wages or salary of any kind, as well as apprentices or assistants who worked without remuneration.

Unemployed: Person aged 12 or older that did have employment but sought it actively in the reference week.

Reference week: The week prior to the interview (from Monday to Sunday).

Intensity of Migration Index: Composite measure of migration calculated by CONAPO that accounts for the rate of migration, the number of sojourners, and the percentage of households receiving remittances. (Higher values indicate higher migration intensity). The full methodology can be found at

District of the precint: Before the 2006 elections, some of the electoral districts were changed so that no districts comprised more than one state. Therefore, some precints switched districts between the 2000 and the 2006 elections. The “district” variable in the original database refers to the information for year 2000. This study’s variable shows the district for the 2006 elections.
