Why did I choose Service Learning?

Service Learning goes beyond the classroom and can create experiences that may change your life. Some students will discover more about themselves and may even choose career paths through their projects. Some students will make life-long friends. Service beyond yourself enriches your life and can make you feel needed, useful, and appreciated. Service Learning can be a rewarding experience that looks great on a resume and helps you when applying for scholarships. Finally, Service Learning incorporates the idea of human coexistence and can help you mature, become more aware of the community surrounding you, and have a broader perspective on life in general. It can connect you to people who may change your life, people you may have never had the opportunity to interact with otherwise.

Mrs. “B’s” Mapping Method:

1.  Think of your thesis statement or central point and write that down on a big piece of paper with plenty of room around it.

2.  Freely brainstorm your ideas on little pieces of paper, or sticky notes (one idea per piece).

Now you are ready to arrange these into a mapping environment.

3.  For things that relate the most to each other, group the pieces of paper together.

4.  Imagine each group of papers as the major and minor details in a paragraph.

5.  Take each group of papers and examine them to choose a main idea or topic sentence that would begin a paragraph with this information in it and write it down (you may want to make it look a little different than the rest: put a star on it, use a different color pencil, a different color sticky note, etc.).

6.  Think about what you want to keep and what might go somewhere else.

a.  Move them around accordingly

Now you are ready to start thinking about the organization of your paragraphs for mapping your report. You’ll need an introduction, some body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

7.  Arrange each group of papers according to level of importance for each paragraph:

a.  Major Supporting Details first

i. Facts

ii.  Reasons

iii.  Examples

iv.  Evidence

v.  Experience

vi.  Description

b.  Minor Supporting Details to these after (see picture 7b)

7b

8.  Group them around or below your Thesis Statement (see next page)

9.  Write them out on your big piece of paper as shown on the next page.

10. Once your mapping is done and you’ve shown it to me, you may begin to write the rough draft of your essay!
