POPULATION ASSIGNMENT
____
6
With the demographic statistics provided in the table below, your task will be to determine the specific needs and strengths of various nations.
1. The Gross Domestic Product per capita: The GDP of a country is the value of all goods and services produced within a nation in a given year. Basically, it’s how much wealth a country generates each year.
2. Adult Literacy: The percentage of the population aged 15 and who can read and write.
DATA Questions
1. In which of the countries would immigration play a central role for maintaining a strong workforce? Why?
3. Which country in the table has the highest dependency ration?
4. Sweden and Botswana both have high dependency ratios. How are they different?
6. Analyze these cartoons
Using the statistics provided, plot a population pyramid for Canadians in 2005
Population by gender and age group, Canada 2005
Age Group / % of Males / % of Females0-4 / 5.4 / 5.1
5-9 / 6.0 / 5.6
10-14 / 6.8 / 6.3
15-19 / 6.9 / 6.4
20-24 / 7.2 / 6.7
25-29 / 6.9 / 6.7
30-34 / 7.0 / 6.8
35-39 / 7.4 / 7.2
40-44 / 8.6 / 8.4
45-49 / 8.2 / 8.1
50-54 / 7.1 / 7.1
55-59 / 6.2 / 6.2
60-64 / 4.7 / 4.7
65-69 / 3.6 / 3.8

1. Which type of population pyramid does Canada have?
2. Which stage of the demographic transition model is Canada in?
3. in which cohort groupings do you see a shift in the gender balance in Canada? Can you think of any reasons for this change?

Population Statistics: Applying your Knowledge! KEY
Name: ______
Part 1: With the demographic statistics provided in the table below, your task will be to determine the specific needs and strengths of various nations.
Why? (2 marks)
Botswana- 38.8% of the pop. is between 0-14. They have a net migration of 6%. This may decline in the future since the birth rate is high at 23. Immigration is needed because the population growth rate is 0%.
Sweden- A high dependency ratio needs a strong economy, especially with a life expectancy of 80 years. The population growth rate is low at .17%.
Students could list other countries but must justify them.
2. What is the correlation between gross domestic product per capita and the net migration rate? Note that the term correlation does not necessarily mean that one factor causes another factor, but when one factor changes, the other seems to change also.
(2 marks)
The higher the GDP, the higher the net migration rate. People want to move to places where they can improve their economic chances.
Singapore and Sweden have higher net migration rates and they have high GDPs.
Botswana is an exception- perhaps the country actively recruits due to the high dependency ratio, perhaps there is conflict on its borders (refugees)…
3. Calculate the estimated doubling time for each of these nations. Round your answers to the nearest full year. (3 marks)
a. Botswana Population growth rate=0%. This country is actually declining in numbers (high migration rate but low life expectancy…)
b. India 50 years
c. Brazil 66 years
4. Which country in the table has the highest dependency ration?
(1 mark)
Botswana- 42.6%
38.8% 0-14
3.8% over 65
5. Is there a relationship between gross domestic product per capita and dependency ration? Explain. (1 mark)
The higher the GDP, the greater chance the country is rich and modernized.
If the country has a high GDP then its dependency ration will tend to be higher on the 65+ spectrum. If the country has a lower GDP then people don’t live as long and the dependency ratio is below 16.
African countries have a HUGE dependency ratio issue with younger kids. Why?
Aids epidemic- working aged people die of Aids.
6. Sweden and Botswana both have high dependency ratios. How are they different? (1 mark)
Sweden’s dependency ratio is evenly distributed due to high immigration and a high life expectancy
Botswana’s dependency ratiois almost entirely within the 65+ range due to the low life expectancy of 33 years.
1. Which type of population pyramid does Canada have?
Stable
2. Which stage of the demographic transition model is Canada in?
Stage 4
Population Pyramids and the Demographic Transition Model
Analyze the following population pyramids. For each pyramid state the a) Demographic Transition Model Stage and b) the type of population pyramid (refer to your notes and pages 324-325 in your text for help) (.5 marks each=10 marks)
Pyramid #1
a) Stage 3- population growth begins to decline
b)Stable
Pyramid #2
a)Stage 5 – birth rate declines below death
b)Contracting
Pyramid #3
a) Stage 4- almost stable. Low growth rate
b)Expanding
Pyramid #4
a) Stage 2
b)Early Expanding
Pyramid #5
a) Stage 4- birth rate is declining
b)Contracting
