REVIEW FOR THE FINAL EXAM: Tuesday May 10th, 8 a.m.

Note: This is the FINAL VERSION of the test review. No further material will be added

Material for Exam #4 will begin on page 462, Biodiversity Loss and Species Extinction and will cover the remainder of Chapter 15, and chapters 16, 17, and 20, plus the film Afflueza.

As usual, there will be 50 multiple-choice questions worth 2 points each, plus up to 10 points worth of bonus questions. There will be two short-essay questions concerning lecture material.

In addition to reading case histories for each chapter, there will definitely be questions concerning the following Figures, Tables, and pages:

Chapter 15 REMEMBER TO LOOK AT THE CASE HISTORY FOR THIS CHAPTER. One question concerning the information on mass extinctions figures 15.8, 15.9 and Table 15.1 (look at these as a group!); Figure 15.10 (look at the various ways in which invasive species disrupt native populations, i.e. “crowds out other plants”, or “releases toxins” ); Know the list of “ecosystem services” on page 471; Know what benefits are provided by biodiversity (section headings on pp. 470-476); Figure 15.14 (we stressed this one in class); Figure 15.15; Read page 484 and the bulleted points carefully; Figure 15.19 (what do you notice about the distribution of hotspots around the world?); there may be 1 to 2 additional questions.

Chapter 16 Figures 16.3; 16.4; 16.9 (notice the patterns); Read pp.500-501 about GIS; Figure 16.10 (be able to relate this figure to what you see in figure 16.9); 16.11 (including any definitions used in the figure); 16.16 (be able to explain what is shown in the photograph); Figure 16.19; plus 1 to 2 additional questions.

Chapter 17 Figures 17.1; 17.2; Table 17.1; Figure 17.3; table 17.2 (know the top producer in each category); For the case history, be sure to read “Viewpoints” on page 531; Figures 17.14; 17.15; 17.22 There will be two or three additional questions taken fronm the text

Chapter 20 Figure 20.2; Table 20.2; Fig. 20.4 and others to be announced, but this is the single most important chapter in the text. I suggest reading it twice! There will be about 8 questions from this chapter.

FILM: Affluenza : Know the “symptoms” of affluenza, look back at any numbers or statistics given in the film that indicate trends in the way that are society consumes. In general, just retell the story in your mind as you read the notes, asking: Wht do we spend and consume so much? What are the personal, social, and environmental consequences of this behavior? What can we do to break out of this “Illness”? There will be about 6 questions over the film. (See next page)

NOTE: I do not feel that information was equally distributed, so some chapters might be weighted a little more heavily than others this time (there will be anywhere from 8 to 12 questions per chapter.)

OTHER THINGS TO KNOW that might possibly show up as bonus questions:

1)What species, thought extinct for the past 60 years has been found alive and (hopefully) well in Arkansas?

2)Why is the instructor happy with Walmart these days?
