Beneath Everything Ordinary
Beneath everything ordinary and commonplace lies the extraordinary and the unique. This is the theme of the bedtime stories we tell our children. Jack plants bean-seed. It produces a giant stalk that leads him on to fortune. Cinderalla gets the gratuitous help of her fairy godmother to attend a ball and to enchant her prince.
We love to tell these stories because they evoke a stand of hope and expectation. They imply that there is more to reality than meets the eye. However, we scarcely take them seriously.
The story of today’s Gospel – the transfiguration of Christ – is not unlike a bedtime story. It evokes a vision of hope beyond our deepest imagination – that the majesty and glory of God is revealed in Jesus Christ. Should we take it seriously? This is a conundrum that can only be answered in faith. If, at the foot of the mountain, you asked Peter, James and John who Jesus was, they may have replied: a friend, a good holy man, a healer, a prophet. However, at the top of the mountain, Jesus is transformed and transfigured before them. His real identity is revealed by the Voice of God. It declares him to be the Beloved son of the Father. He is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. He is Divine – endowed with the glory of God. His final destiny is not to be nailed to a cross, but to sit in glory at the right hand of the Father. Beneath everything ordinary and commonplace lies something extraordinary and unique.
The disciples received many indications of his divinity. At the Annunciation, the angel declared to Mary that her child would “be called Son of the Most High”. (Lk.1:32) At his baptism in the Jordan the same Voice declared him to be “My Son the Beloved”. (MK. 1:9-11) However, they did not appreciate the import of this event until after Jesus rose from the dead.
Every disciple of Christ (you and me), is called to understand and appreciate the true, glorious identity of Christ as he is revealed by the Father. We are asked to acknowledge his divinity and to worship him. With eyes of faith we are invited to see beyond the ordinariness of his humanity and declare him to be the divine Son of God. This assertion of faith is not made easily. It needs to be sought in prayer. It is hardly accidental that the Transfiguration happens when Jesus and three disciples are at prayer. Prayer is the privileged means by which we experience the presence of God and renew our faith.
Prayer is not the province of a few mystics. All are meant to experience the presence of God. Such moments when we feel God’s presence can never be fully described. They are moments when we realise that, beneath everything ordinary and commonplace, lies something extraordinary and unique. These are special times when we glimpse the glorious life of God.

Teneille lives with her family in Derby, 200km from Broome in Western Australia.
Two years ago, Teneille resisted going to school and regularly played truant. She fell behind in her grades, rarely mixed with other children and had little confidence.
Many of the children in Derby come from families with low literacy levels, minimal job opportunities and suffer from poor health. Little importance has been placed on school attendance and indigenous specific education and many children like Teneille were falling behind in learning and development.
In 2007, Carita Australia partnered with the Jalaris Aboriginal Corporation to address the issues of poor attendance and cultural health issues in children. By establishing the Kids Future Club (afternoon kids club, children and parents are now encouraged in a culturally appropriate way, to understand the value of school attendance and learn about health and hygiene. The club also provides additional adult support groups, such as drop-in centres and mobile health clinics.
By using indigenous child education workers, local capacity in child development, education and health has improved significantly. Many of the children are now getting back on track in the education system. Teneille now attends school every day and looks forward to going.
Your donation to Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion helps to achieve the Millennium Development Goals including ensuring primary education for all children, to halve world poverty by 2015.
