EFL/ESP/CAELL Positions Available

Positions available at both men's and women's campus for 2007-2008

The English Language Center of King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is recruiting both male and female EFL/ESP/CAELL teachers who will be available for the 2007/2008 academic year.

1. Native English Language Speakers (preferred).

2. Two years of teaching experience outside the teacher's country (preferred). Experience within the Middle East will be an advantage.

3. Married couples are preferred.

Candidates must meet one of the following educational criteria:

1. A BA in English (or related field) with a minimum of 3 years relevant EFL/ESP teaching experience at university level, or 6 years elsewhere

2. A BA in English (or related field) plus a one-year TEFL Diploma and 1 year relevant EFL/ESP teaching experience at the university level, or 2 years elsewhere.

3. An MA in TEFL, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, or English.

1. Salaries are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

2. An annual housing allowance of SR 17,000.

3. A furniture allowance equivalent to half of the housing allowance -- only for newcomers to the Kingdom.

4. 60 days paid annual summer vacation (usually begins in June).

5. End of service gratuity in the amount of one half month's salary for every year of service if service is for 2 or more years, and one month's salary for every year of service if service is for five or more years.

6. Economy class air tickets for relocation to Saudi Arabia, and repatriation at the end of service for the contractee and 3 eligible dependents.

7. Annual vacation economy class round-trip air tickets for the contractee and 3 eligible dependents.

8. Official vacations: Eidul-Fitr and Eidul-Adha.

9. Saudi government levies no income tax.

10. Weekly teaching load is 20 hours plus 5 office hours per week. Working extra teaching hours is payable.

11. Work is in Jeddah.

He/She will then receive an annual increment of 1% to 5% for each full contractual year of service depending on his/her level of performance at the ELC.

All the figures are in Saudi Riyals.

Approximate Exchange rate: US $ 1 = SR 3.75

The following contractual information is especially important for newly recruited staff members.

1. The contractual year at KingAbdulazizUniversity starts in August, 2009. This means that contractees arriving after this date will have in their first year a contract of less than one year’s duration. Calculation of the number of days of annual vacation, housing allowance and furniture allowance will be pro-rated for anything less than a full year’s contract.

2. A furniture allowance equivalent to 50% of the housing allowance will be paid to the following:

a) Those contractees who have never worked in the Kingdom before.

b) Those contractees:

1) who have never received a furniture allowance from a Saudi Governmental authority.

AND

2) whose previous contract with any organization in the Kingdom ended two years before entering into a contract with the University.

3. Newly contracted staff members must have all the photocopies of their certificates and letters of experience authenticated by the Saudi Educational Mission in London, (U.K.), or in Washington, D.C., or any other Saudi Arabian Embassy.

4. A letter of experience is a letter certifying the candidate’s experience in teaching English. No other teaching experience will be considered relevant for contractual purposes. The letter of experience should contain the official letterhead of the institution at which the candidate taught; it should clearly state the date that the candidate began teaching at the institution and the date that he/she ended his/her contract with the institution; and it should be signed by someone with the authority to sign such a letter for that institution.

5. The candidate must send photocopies of his/her degrees and postgraduate diplomas and of his/her letters of experience to the Director of the EnglishLanguageCenter. These photocopies will be forwarded to the University Contracts Department. Upon receiving approval of the candidate from the Ministry of Higher Education, the University’s Contracts Department will issue the candidate a letter of offer.

This letter of offer will be dependent upon the candidate providing the Contracts Department with authenticated photocopies of degrees, diplomas and letters of experience.

Upon accepting the Contracts Department’s letter of offer the candidate will begin visa processing with the Saudi Arabian Embassy and will proceed to Jeddah as quickly as possible. The final contract between the candidate and the University will be signed in Jeddah.

6. The candidate must bring with him/her to Jeddah: Originals and authenticated photocopies of relevant degrees and postgraduate diplomas and originals and authenticated photocopies of letters of experience.

The salary offer of the University Contracts Department will only be considered final upon the presentation of all of the above mentioned documents.

Appendix No. 1 Language Teachers: (Extract)

Foreign Language Teachers shall hold the following qualifications:

1. The Language Teacher shall have a B.A. degree in the language he/she teaches with an average grade of “good” GPA 3/4 and shall have a Diploma in teaching the language as a foreign language. In addition to that he/she must have one year of experience in teaching the language. The University prefers those who have taught Arab students.

2. Or he/she shall have a Bachelor’s degree in the language to be taught (with an average grade of “Good” GPA 3/4) and with at least three years of experience in teaching the language. The University prefers those who have taught Arab students.

(N.B. According to the Regulations Governing the Employment of Non-Saudi Teaching Staff, “years of experience” are calculated as follows:
One year at university level = one year’s experience
Two years at non-university level = one year’s experience.)

3. Or he/she shall have an M.A. degree in teaching the language as a foreign language. It is preferred that the Teacher has at least one year of experience in teaching the language. The University prefers those who have previous experience in teaching Arab students.
