Introduction: Welcome to Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering! We are very proud of this new building, and the exciting opportunity it provides to be a gateway to both the College of Engineering as well as PurdueUniversity’s West Lafayette campus. In order to keep Armstrong Hall working at its best, we need to team together, using common sense and good housekeeping, to ensure smooth productivity in a safe environment. This document is an overview of safety procedures and general rules for staff offices and the building as a whole.
Office keys will be distributed by the building deputy after completing this training module and obtaining signatures on the key request form located at the end of this document.
- General Safety:
- All building occupants should be respectful and observant of safety issues in and around the building. If you see unsafe physical situations or behaviors of concern, please report it to your building deputy or Head as appropriate.
- There will be no skateboards, roller skates, or bicycles allowed inside Armstrong Hall. Activity which results in defacing of Armstrong exterior surfaces is not allowed. No pets are allowed inside Armstrong Hall, except service animals belonging to staff and students requiring their assistance.
- Laboratory safety will be discussed in separate training. As a general statement, however, if your work does not require your presence in the Armstrong labs or shops, please do not enter them.
- Do not bring chemicals of any sort into Armstrong until after working with your Armstrong safety representative or the building deputy. All chemicals must be labeled and logged.
- In case of evacuation, do not stay in your office or lab. Exit the building through the closest doorway, and stay more than 100 feet away from Armstrong while emergency personnel are on-site. Do not go back inside the building until emergency personnel have given permission to do so.
- For a listing of potential emergencies and suggested responses, go to
- Building Hours: Three doors to Armstrong Hall will remain open 24 hours; the eastern entry (closest to Northwestern avenue), the southern entry (closest to Physics), and north Atrium entry (location by the statue). These doors will only be locked during university holidays. A building key can be provided you by the Armstrong building deputy.
- Building Use:
- Armstrong Hall is a new facility, and we want to take the best possible care of it. Even so, accidents will happen which may involve a mess. Please contact your building deputy for assistance if something needs to be cleaned up- they will know how to reach Building Services.
- If you see non-hazardous trash (e.g., notebook paper, candy wrappers, etc.), please help by placing these items into a nearby trash receptacle.
- For assistance with hazardous items (chemicals, biohazards, etc.), please contact your buildingdeputy- they will know how to reach REM or the appropriate cleanup staff.
- Please report any vandalism (graffiti, broken glass, abused furnishings) to thebuilding deputy or the facility manager. If you witness Armstrong being vandalized, please contact the Purdue Police (911 or 494-8221).
- Building Alterations:
- Hanging pictures in offices and reception areas is allowed, but must be done by the Physical Facilities staff, after a work order has been generated. Please see the Armstrong building deputy.
- Repainting walls should not be done unless approval has been received from your department head or building deputy- and then only by using Physical Facilities staff, after a work order has been generated.
- Do-it-yourself plumbing is not allowed. Physical Facilities staff will need to review any suggested changes, after a work order has been generated. Please see the Armstrong building deputy.
- Furnishings in each office have been chosen to be consistent with the look and feel throughout Armstrong Hall- please do not bring in furniture from other sources without first receiving the approval of the Armstrong building deputy. Similarly, do not remove furniture from your work space without notifying the buildingdeputy.
- Kitchenettes: Academic and some student areas are equipped with kitchenettes. These areas are not supported by Building Services, except for emptying the trash cans. Each area is responsible for cleaning their kitchenette’s refrigerator, microwave, and counter or table tops. If you make a mess, clean it up.
- Acoustics: Be sensitive to others’ need for a quiet working environment when talking on the phone, playing music, and holding conversations in person.
- Meeting Spaces:
- Armstrong Hall has collaborative meeting spaces throughout the building, designated as discussion rooms, study rooms, resource rooms, and seating areas. Use of these spaces is encouraged, but please be aware of the volume generated by meeting participants.
- Conference rooms are also located throughout the building. Conference rooms are used by reservation, with the home school or department having first priority. The Engineering Resource Allocation Tool (RAT), found at , is used to request rooms. If your meeting is canceled, please contact the conference room administrator, identified within RAT, to release the room.
- Armstrong Hall Key Checkout:
- Keys to Armstrong Hall are for your use while employed in the building. Each key bears an identifying number, and is signed out to you personally (see page 7). Do not lend or share your key. Upon leaving Armstrong, you will be required to return your key(s). Failure to return any key assigned to you will incur a fine. Additionally, students risk additionalconsequences by failing to return their key(s).
- A loss of key does not necessarily mean they will be replaced. Key replacement requests must be made in writing to the key issuer explaining how the loss occurred and what attempts have been made to locate the missing key(s).
