WHERE & WHEN

Spring 2013 auditions for the Auburn University Chamber Choir, Gospel Choir, Conductors’ Chorus, Women's Chorus and Men's Chorus occur November 12-15, and November 26-29by appointment. Contact Dr. William Powell at or 334-844-3166. Choir auditions are open to ALL Auburn University undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of major or minor. Students should enroll in the choir(s) for which they plan to audition (see “Course Enrollment” below).Auditions are ten minutes in length and they occur in114 Goodwin Music Building.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

Unless noted otherwise, students are assessed in the following areas for each of the choral groups:

  • Prepared solo (piano, accompanist, CD player, line-in cable, and USB port available if needed)
    Note: Each student should prepare a song written specifically for solo voice, the style of which should reflect the type of music typically performed by the desired choir. For example, students auditioning for the Gospel Choir should prepare a gospel song; students auditioning for Chamber Choir, Women's Chorus, etc. should prepare an art song, aria, solo hymn or spiritual arrangement, or a suitable substitute.   • Vocal Range
  • Pitch-matching
  • Tonal memory
  • Intonation
  • Voice quality
  • Sight reading
  • Movement: clapping and swaying while singing
  • *Scales: major, minor, chromatic, and whole tone (Chamber Choir only)

*Note: Students should be prepared to sing any of the scales indicated above with the same scale being played in a different key, but simultaneously, on the piano (

COURSE ENROLLMENT

If possible, prior to the audition, students are encouraged to enroll in the ensemble course(s) for which they plan to audition. Doing so facilitates communication and helps anticipate potential class size when preparing course materials. The course numbers are listed below for the respective ensembles. Students will receive one hour of academic credit per group, per semester. Students will be notified of the status of their audition via e-mail prior to the first day of classes, thus allowing time for students to make any necessary schedule adjustments due to the audition results.

UNIVERSITY SINGERS (Show Choir)

Auditions for the Auburn University Singers will occur in the spring and summer for participation in Fall 2012. Students are accepted into this ensemble only once per year. Click hereto download the audition dates, requirements and additional information.

SCHOLARSHIPS?

Please be aware that the vocal scholarship audition is completely separate from the choral audition. Therefore, vocal students who are interested in being considered for a vocal scholarship should apply for a scholarship audition. Scholarship auditions occur in February and March of each upcoming academic year.
