PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

The Food Technology Assistant is responsible to the Learning Area Leader – Technology and assists and supports teaching staff and students to facilitate learning outcomes in a classroom environment.

STATEMENT OF DUTIES

General Duties / The Food Technology Assistant demonstrates a capacity to:
§  Communicate effectively and positively with members of the school community including teachers and other support staff delivering to Food Handling standards.
§  Work cooperatively with a range of people including teachers, education support staff and students, and to share working spaces, supplies and equipment with other staff.
§  Efficiently organise the provision of food and equipment for classes and to maintain a safe, clean and presentable kitchen, preparation and storage areas to Food Handling standards.
In addition the Food Technology Assistant demonstrates a proficiency in the use of computers, software and web based portals, including online ordering of supplies. Proficiency in the use of kitchen equipment as relevant to the position.
The Food Technology Assistant is responsible for:
Managing supplies
·  Order
·  Receive / Check
·  Stock
·  Calculate cost of foods
·  Collating weekly food orders to ensure that all ingredients and equipment are on hand at the beginning of each lesson.
·  Replenishing any existing stock or equipment
·  Purchase specialised foods for students with food intolerances and specific religions.
·  Check use by dates and rotate stock.
·  Process invoices in a timely manner and forward to school accounts department.
·  Provide data and assist teaching staff in calculating the cost per student of ingredients for individual and group recipes.
Preparing ingredients for Food Tech classes
·  Cut
·  Weigh
·  Measure
·  Provide to classes
·  Accurately weighed, measured, cut, labelled, dated and refrigerated or frozen.
·  Provide materials in time for classes
·  Photocopy recipes for classes.
Managing Food Hygiene and general cleanliness in classrooms, preparation and storage areas.
·  General cleaning of equipment and appliances not limited to:
o  Fridges
o  Stoves and ovens
o  Drawers, cupboards, window sills and bench tops
o  Storeroom
o  Saucepan Racks
o  Microwaves
·  Overseeing laundering of tea towels, aprons, wash cloths etc. ensuring provision of clean linen for classes
·  Maintaining supplies of cleaning products and check washing liquid etc. is full.
·  Washing rubbish bin and lid
·  Checking food supplies for use by dates
·  Checking temperatures and storage conditions
·  Reporting maintenance issues
·  Each kitchen, prep and storage area to be cleaned and maintained to a hygienically safe and presentable standard at the end of the last class of the day.
·  Cleaning products are labelled appropriately and are used in accordance with MSDS and instructions for safe use.
·  Checking food supplies for freshness / in date and ensure that they are safe for use. Checking, recording and monitoring food supplies in accordance with safe food handling standards. Disposal of unsafe foods.
·  Reporting maintenance issues via the school maintenance portal or report urgent safety issues immediately to the Property & Maintenance Team Manager or Leader.
·  Ensuring that unsafe equipment is taken out of service.
Accept delivery of foods
·  Check delivery
·  Collect dockets and record details
·  Go through weeks recipes to portion food i.e. Meat, Butter etc.
·  Freeze meat etc. if required – label for each class
·  Put all food away
·  Put food products into storage containers.
Pantry Check
·  Check Use-by-dates: Throw out old food.
·  Fill containers
·  Clean pantry – shelves & tidy
Food Preparation: Go through recipes
·  Prepare food ingredients for classes.
·  Check if meat etc. needs to be thawed for next day’s classes.
Class Assistance
·  Assist teaching staff and students with practical classes
Child Safety / §  Be familiar with and understand the College Child Safe Policy and Code of Conduct, and any other policies or procedures relating to child safety
§  Assist in the provision of a child safe environment for students
§  Demonstrate duty of care to students in relation to the physical and mental wellbeing
Professional Development / §  Commit to ongoing professional development in your area of work
§  Be open to researching areas of interest to directions provided in the College Strategic Plan
§  Continue development of ICT skills as technologies evolve
§  Be an active member of a relevant professional association, if applicable or as duties permit
General Duties / §  Contribute to a healthy and safe environment for yourself and others and comply with all safe work policies and procedures
§  Attend school meetings and after school services/assemblies, sporting events, mass, community and faith days as required by the Principal
§  Demonstrate professional and collegiate relationships with colleagues
§  Other duties as directed by the Principal

Learning Area Leader / Liaise regularly to ensure that student programs are in place, that assistance to teaching staff is confirmed and that student observations are documented.
Teaching staff / Assist and provide support to facilitate student learning in the classroom.

Commitment to Catholic Education / §  A demonstrated understanding of the ethos of a Catholic school and its mission
Commitment to Child Safety / §  Experience working with children
§  A demonstrated understanding of child safety
§  A demonstrated understanding of appropriate behaviours when engaging with children
§  Be a suitable person to engage in child-connected work
§  Must hold or be willing to acquire a Working with Children Check card and must be willing to undergo a National Police Record Check
Education and Experience / Essential:
§  First Aid
