Reading Response Directions: Choose a number from below and write it and the title of your book at the top of your page. Make sure you answer completely. For October-December you must write at least ten sentences. From January on, I expect a minimum of one full page and more than 10 sentences. Check off the responses you've chosen. You may do each one only once. Place the reading log in this pocket.

Fiction Responses

___1. Compare (likenesses and differences) the story to another book that you've read or to a movie that you saw.

___2. Write a letter to a character or to the author of your book. Include things that happen in the book, not just your opinion.

___3. Connect something from the book to your personal life. (What are the people or events that the book reminds you of?)

___4. Summarize what you've read, and then give your opinion or reaction to the story.

___5. After telling how the author ends the story/chapter, create your own ending for the

story/chapter.

___6. Choose three out of the four of the following to tell about: the setting, major events, characters, or ending.

___7. Tell about your favorite part in detail and explain why you liked it.

___8. Write a diary entry from a character's point of view.

___9. Write six interview questions for a character and six answers to those questions from a character's point of view. (They shouldn’t be simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers.)

___10. Are there characters other than the main character that are important to the story? Who are they? Why are they important?

___11. What ideas or themes (for example: friendship, dealing with conflict, death, sharing, etc.) does the author get you to think about? How does the author get you to think about these ideas or themes?

___12. Who is the main character of the story? What are some of the personality traits of that character? Give evidence/examples from the book that show these are their traits.

___13. From what you’ve read so far, make two predictions about what will happen next and explain what in the text makes you think it will happen.

___14. Where and when does the story take place? Explain why you would or would not like to have lived in the time or place of the story. Give examples.

___15. Pick one character and, including their traits and actions, explain why you would or would not like to have her/him as a friend.

___16. Identify 5 “Good Writers” techniques, other than formatting, that the author uses

and give one or more examples for each from the book.

Nonfiction Responses

___17. List ten things you've learned from this book and five things you'd like to know more about.

___18. Write at least five important dates and tell what happened on those dates. You

should write several sentences for each date.

___19. Make up a new scene using the people/characters from the book. Make sure you

think about the people’s/characters’ personalities.

___20. Write a poem or song about what you've read. (If it's a song to a certain tune, tell me the name of the tune.)
