PHYSICS GOHS
The purpose of this activity is to construct a device that will protect an egg when dropped onto a hard surface. From the equation F∆t = mvf - mvi, we can see that the product of force and time is equal to the change in momentum of an object. Although the product of force and time will be relatively constant for all of the dropped eggs, it is possible to reduce the force on the egg by increasing the time over which the force is exerted.
Device Requirements
- Your egg-carrying device must fall freely after release. No parachutes or devices that take advantage of air resistance can be used in your design. The egg may not take more than 1 second to fall!
- Your device must have a mass no greater than 50 grams.
- There is no limit on the types of materials you can use in your construction.
- The egg must be easy to install and remove.
Grading
All devices will be graded out of a possible 10 points.
- 10 points – Make weight, free fall, no break.
- 9 points – Make weight, free fall, has break.
- 8 points – Make weight, no free fall, has break.
- 7 points – Showed up with egg device, everything else failed.
Eggs will be supplied on the day of the activity. You cannot bring your own egg for this activity. A crack in the egg will be considered a broken egg. Eggs must survive the drop without breaking to be considered a successful drop. Your group will be given only one egg on the day of the activity. Bonus points may be given for ingenuity, creativity, entertainment, etc…
