WHAT DID JESUS TEACH THE PEOPLE?

(John 8:1-8) Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning [Gk: at dawn] he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them [what did He teach them?]. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him [testing him], that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
1. (Lev 20:10) And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death [“and ye shall stone them with stones that they die” Deut 22:24].
2. The Nelson Study Bible: “testing him” If Jesus had said not to stone her, He would have contradicted Jewish law. If He had said to stone her, He would have run counter to Roman law, which did not permit Jews to carry out their own executions (John 18:31).
3. (Mat 13:19) When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart [“their hearts” Mark 4:15; Luke 8:12]. This is he which received seed by the way side.
4. Commentary: the soil (ground, dirt, dust) in the parable of “The sower soweth the word” (Mark 4:14) wherein “The seed is the word of God” (Luke 8:11) is the heart of man.
5. (Jer 31:33) But this shall be the [“new” Jer31:31] covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. [these verses are repeated in Heb 8:10-12]
6. (Exo 31:18) And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.
7. (Deu 9:10) And the LORD delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the LORD spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.
8. (Mat 22:35-40) Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him [testing him], and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang [as on the cross] all the law and the prophets.
(John 8:9-11) And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord [kurios; supreme in authority: God]. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I [God] condemn thee [to judge against, i.e. sentence:--damn]: go, and sin no more.
1. convicted = Gk: to confute, admonish:--convict, convince, tell a fault, rebuke, reprove.
2. conscience = Gk: co-perception, i.e. moral consciousness /// to see completely; to understand or become aware:--consider, know.
3. conscience = Dict: 1. the internal recognition of right and wrong as regards one’s actions and motives; the faculty which decides upon the moral quality of one’s actions and motives, enjoining one to conformity with the moral law.
4. accusers = Gk: against one in the assembly, i.e. a complainant at law; spec. Satan.
5. Satan = Gk: the accuser, i.e. the devil.
6. Satan = Heb: an opponent: espec. Satan, the arch-enemy of good:--adversary /// to attack.
(John 8:11) NEITHER DO I [God] CONDEMN THEE [to judge against, i.e. sentence:--damn]:
GO, AND SIN NO MORE”
(Heb 8:10-12) [Jer 31:33,34] For this is the [“new” Heb:8:8] covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
1. (Mat 6:9-13) After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts [“sins” TLB], as we forgive our debtors [“those who have sinned against us” TLB]. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. (Mat 6:14,15) For if ye forgive men their trespasses, [sins] your heavenly Father will also forgive you [your sins]: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses [and you will walk in darkness].
2. (Mark 11:25,26) And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses [sins]. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses [your sins, and you will walk in darkness].
3. (Col 3:13) Forbearing [put up with: suffer] one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
4. (Prov 15:29) The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.
(John 8:12) Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light [illumination (enlightenment)] of the world [the darkness that you are in]: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light [illumination (enlightenment)] of life.
1. (Gen 1:1-4) In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
a. darkness = Heb: the dark; hence (lit.) darkness; fig. misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness.
b. light = Heb: illumination or (concr.) luminary (in every sense, including lightning, happiness, etc.):--bright, clear, + day, light (-ning), morning, sun.
2. (1 Pet 2:9) But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
3. (Psa 18:28) For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.
