Narrative Information – Part Two

NAME: Maribeth Hartung

Biographical Sketch:

After having been in the manufacturing Human Resource field for 15 years I decided to use my skills helping individuals with disabilities find meaningful employment. I first worked as an Employment Specialist at UW Stout with Projects with Industry. I left there to supervise the Pathways to Independence grant at the Center for Independent Living for Western Wisconsin (CILWW), Vocational Futures Planning research and demonstration grant. I gained a much deeper understanding of person centered services. After being trained in VFP and working the grant for 4 years the grant ended. I left the grant world to work for a staffing agency, Express Personnel where I was mainly doing sales. Not fulfilled I went back to working with individuals in need and began working for Experience Works, covering 10 counties working with low income senior citizens who needed retraining and employment as a Regional Employment Coordinator. When CILWW wrote for the Pathways MIG grant to partner with Community Health Partnership (CHP) they asked if I would come back to facilitate. After the MCO employment program was up and running I was hired by CHP as their Employment Coordinator where I have been working to insure integrated employment choice is being offered to our members.

Anticipated contribution to the Board of WI APSE:

I feel the Wisconsin MCO’s need a voice on the board of WI APSE. MCO’s appear to currently be at the center of the funding issues that are threatening the on going supports of individuals who are enjoying integrated employment and community integration. I want to be a part of the creative solutions that will ultimately ensure our members and all people with significant barriers to employment have access to integrated community employment and the necessary supports.

History/nature of involvement in employment for people with disabilities:

The position I am currently in at CHP is a wonderful mix of direct consumer contact & advocacy; training of MCO staff in employment related policies, advocacy & best practices; developing those best practices for the MCO; developing relationships with DVR and providers while bringing on new service providers and services; and working at the state level in helping to shape policy and bringing the new MCO’s up to speed as they enter the Family Care structure.

I have spent a great deal of time in coordinating training for Customized Employment as well as mentoring service providers as they learn the process. I was invited to attend a Customized Employment Retreat in Mississippi with Michael Callahan where I was able to learn more from other providers from around the country that have successfully used this process. I continue to be a strong advocate. CHP was the first MCO in Wisconsin to use the CE process to hire an individual in a regular part time position as Facilities Assistant, filling unmet needs of the organization. I have been asked to assist WWC perform a needs analysis so they can discover their unmet needs that could be met through customized employment.
